Warmest Jacket / Pants for Bow Hunting

Postby peteyg2 » Mon Apr 30, 2012 9:04 am

I'm hoping I can get some recommendations from the bow hunters here on the warmest (but most quiet) jacket and pants for bow season.

For background: This will be my 4th season bow hunting. I hunt in upstate NY. Always from a stand. The season opens Oct 1 this year, but by the end of October I'm always cold. I typically wear two layers of base layer (socks, long underwear, etc.). I've been wearing field and stream fleece with windbreaker material. It stops the wind well, but offers little warmth. I'm looking to change for this season.

Any recommendations? Wool (berber)?

Thanks.

Pete

Check out the Mathews line from Gamehide. I've heard good things.

Thanks. Any opinions on arctic shield? It seems like it's a lot cheaper then a good wool jacket.

My suggestion would be Grey Wolf Woolens but it is gonna cost you. You won't find any better gear on the market though!

I'll second Gray Wolf and add King of the Mountain and Sleeping Indian. You're going to pay for all of them, but you'll appreciate it when your gear is actually warm, noiseless and built specifically for bowhunters. Not to mention it will last forever. Each has a line of garments designed to stay out of your way when you draw and shoot. If fit is a big deal, Gray Wolf has a made to measure program.

Sitka makes the best cold weather gear. It is so comfortable at the same time, It can get expensive since their gear is based on layer system. But it works!

I ended up getting Arctic Shield performance jacket and bibs. They are super quiet. It's hard to tell how warm, because it's still very warm out. I probably won't break them out until november.

Thanks.
