Taurus Opinions

Postby OrangeLake » Sat Feb 06, 2010 10:57 pm

I know this is opening a can of worms, but what do y'all think of Taurus'? I know of a guy selling a PT140 pro 10, says it like new, only shot a few times with a box of ammo for $285. I've never had any experience with a Taurus and don't want to buy junk. Thanks in advance.

I bought a PT 111 for my gf and its not a bad little gun. The fit and finish isnt real great as you might expect but it feeds and ejects anything we give it.If your going to spend alot of time shooting it I would save for something of a little better quality though

I wouldn't buy a single thing from them, revolvers included anymore. They are CRAPPY guns. People always come back and tell me I'm and idiot, but guess what? I work at Gander in the guns department and see more Taurus's come back than any other gun. Them and the S&W Sigma are some of the worst guns on the market today. Their autos feel cheap and on the revolvers you can feel metal grinding if you mess with them.

When some employees were at the shot show a couple years ago the Taurus 1911 they shot fell apart. Taurus even apologized and said they had problems and would try to fix them... They didn't. People might flame me and say "Show me the proof," like you do every time, but I can't fit all the service orders we have to take for Taurus's on here. Save up some more money and get a better gun. Trust me on this one no matter what anyone else says.

They're older stuff is good stuff, but the current product starting about 3-5 years ago absolutely sucks. I wouldn't give 5 dollars for a Taurus, and I sure wouldn't trust my life to something that I see come in at least once a week with jams, misfires, cylinders locked up, bent frames, cylinders out of time, etc.

Thanks a lot guys. I appreciate the info.

Exactly why I was hoping you'd comment Preach. I did a little research myself later that day and found some bad reviews, like the mags ejecting after every shot (on some) and the plastic frame splitting after a 1000 rounds or so on most. I'll wait for something else.

For a hundred more bucks you can get into a used Springfield XD or Glock. Both of which are great guns. I don't think I've ever seen a Glock come back for anything other than getting nigh sights installed, and I've seen one XD come back. I forgot what was wrong with it. If I remember right is was something cosmetic and didn't effect the performance of the gun. If you're looking for some good prices try www.budsgunshop.com They've got some really good prices on stuff most of the time. Buy it and they ship it to your ffl for the background check or whatever you have to do in your state.

I've got a Glock 27 and love it. I'd like another CC gun as well and one maybe a shade smaller. I've held the XD and while I'm sure it's a good gun it looks like vomit IMO. Thanks for the input, and I'll check out buds.

I've sold hundred of Taurs revolvers and autos and the only taurus model I remember having a few issues with was the compact 40cal (Pt140?), I believe they even stopped making it for awhile because of the issues. Other than that, none and a Taurus comes with lifetime warranties. I probably wouldn't buy one of their autos but their revolvers make you think long a hard before you would spend the extra money on a s&w or something similar.

You were going to buy a Taurus PT140, you own a glock, and somehow you're critiquing the XD for its looks? :lol3: :lol3: :lol3: Sorry, but the polymer framed guns are all equally hideous. A 1911 is sexy, a polymer gun is just functional.

It seems like you are either a glock person or you're not. The grips either fit you perfect, or they don't. Yes xd's are made in croatia, but they are solid guns, the ergonomics fit me a lot better than the glocks, and I like the safety on the grip.

out of curiosity, what makes Austria so much better than Croatia? They're damn near right next to one another, one country apart, and were at one time the same country, i.e. Austria-Hungary. I guess croatia was apart of a socialist country after WWII and Austria wasn't, but you would think that would enhance their gun making abilities.

I think for a polymer the glock looks great, not so much for the taurus and surely not the XD. But that's why I said IMO. And the 1911 will undoubtedly forever be the best looking handgun ever created. If I wasn't after another CCW I'd grab one next.

I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. The only XD's that struck me as ugly are the mixed colors. If its a flat black plastic gun, its a flat black plastic gun, but when they start making them green and brown, I just don't care for it.

My opinion is that you are better off buying another brand. I have a Taurus .40 cal, and I wont buy another.

Tarurs is fine and a solid value. If you pick one up, and like it versus another brand, S&W, Glock Springfield whatever, don't hesitate because of the label. Heres a Taurus (shameless plug) also on youtube

http://www.taurususa.com/video-corporate.cfm

Do yourself a favor and skip the sales pitch except the NRA 2005 Gun of The Year award,go to the 4 minute mark in the video. Nothing shamless there, just facts on that date & course. Has that .97 record been broken since then does anyone know? Stock gun steel comp isn't my game but if so, I'd levy towards this pistol!

All guns can & will malfunction, I've found that 80%+ of all failures are usually 1) improper cleaning or 2) improper lubrication, or a combo thereof exacerbated with time. So the guy that has a used gun for sale that he improperly took care of & didn't oil right, add several thousand rounds well, you get the picture. In your case sounds like you know the guy that's a plus. I'd ask him to shoot the pistol 1st see for yourself if you like it.

In summation if you like it and the price is right, BUY IT!

The only good Taurus is the 24/7 nowadays and that's because they went for a military contract. Until you've worked for a company that has a gunsmith and see Taurus after Taurus come in you won't understand. It's easy to sit here and tell people to buy something and say it's great because others tell you they're good and the company says they're good. I don't care what the NRA or anyone else says. After seeing as many as I have come back to the gunsmith I'll never own one.

And about winning awards. No company is going to take the chance of giving a gun that's a crapper to be reviewed anyway. Anyone that's doing an official review (NRA, Field and Stream, etc.) are going to be given a gun that the company knows is going to perform flawlessly, not one straight off the production line that's coming to you and me.

EVERY GUN MANUFACTURER CAN AND WILL HAVE SOME BAD PIECES.

I find it hard to believe, it doesn't pass the smell test, that 'special' pistols are sold to the Military, and to reviewers, and 'bad' guns are sold to the general public. As is on the video link, perhaps 'special' Winchester rounds were used to set that .97 second record?

A good friend of mine actually used to do a fair amount of gunsmithing, and purchased a Taurus compact 45 I don't remember the model#. No problems.

And, some say the older stuff is bad, older stuff is good, pistols are bad but revolvers are ok, but don't buy a newer revolver and EVERYTHING ELSE is ok/not ok with Taurus

Did anyone on here work in the gunsmithing shop in the early 2000's that had to retrofit over 26,000 Glocks for the NYPD?. The fix was so bad, Glock had to set up a special shop just to fix it all. And that's not the only problem with Glocks. Heres one link WOW
http://www.thegunzone.com/glock/problems.html

I just simply did a search on Glock + problems, I don't care one way or the other about them. The point is, ppl will still buy them, and Springfields, etc. But all is bad with Taurus, stay away!

Yes, if I saw a certain amount in access come back as a return, or to be fixed, I would be concerned. And Springfield's workbench is empty, and so is Glocks?

Fire it, if you like it , buy it! 26,000 pieces, at one setting! OMG!

The gunsmith at work has been gunsmithing for much longer than I've been alive, probably darn near twice as long. I heard him slander Taurus today himself. Yes, Springfields, Glocks, etc do have issues from time to time, but not near as much as Taurus. If you get a good Taurus you're good to go generally, but if you have a problem one it's off to the factory. Why? You know how they brag about making their own parts and everything? Turns out they don't sell them to anyone else and since they have patents no one else makes them either. So if you get a bad one it's a 1-2 month wait for them to get it fixed. It's a lot of hassle that you can avoid if you spend a couple hundred more dollars since every other manufacturer sells parts.

I own several Taurus handguns .... .357, .44 Mag, and a 9mm. All have been great guns for the price. I initially had a problem with the M44 but I was able to send it back to the factory, get it repaired, and have it back in my hands in a month. For what you pay for one you really get a decent deal .... are they as good as my H&K's???? No .... but I could have bought two Taurus pistols for the price of one of my USP's....
