I have done some research and found a few CA legal AR-15's but not too many results. Does anyone know of any websites or good makes for California Legal AR-15's? Thanks in advance for any help.
I have done some research and found a few CA legal AR-15's but not too many results. Does anyone know of any websites or good makes for California Legal AR-15's? I've been tempted to have my out of state friend buy it and I'll reimburse him but I want to be able to take it to ranges and be legal. Thanks in advance for any help.
Check with calguns.net. Lots of good information on those forums. Basically it boils down like this:
There are three ways to have an AR-15 in California. The second two ways require your receiver to be an "off-list" lower or "OLL." Check the 2nd page of the Calguns Assault Weapon ID flowchart (http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf) for the list of rifle receivers that are prohibited.
1. Registered Assault Weapon - You owned it before a certain long-ago date and you registered it with the state before the deadline for registration. No new registrations are being accepted. You can have all the evil features you like. Since you don't already own an AR-15, this way doesn't apply to you.
2. Fixed Magazine Rifle - You have all the evil features you want, your rifle looks just like any free-state rifle. But where it really counts, the functionality and firepower of the rifle --it's actually crippled very badly. You can only have 10 rounds in the magazine, and that magazine has to be locked in. You'll need to fumble for a pointy tool (not a finger) to drop the mag.
3. Featureless Rifle - You have removed all evil features, so you can use your legally-owned high-capacity magazines and you can drop the mag with a finger press. Since one of the evil features is a pistol grip, these rifles look different from free state rifles.
There's no need to buy out of state. Plenty of CA dealers will sell you a CA-legal AR-15. However, it's up to you to know the law inside and out and make sure the rifle stays in a CA-legal configuration. It's very easy to do something seemingly insignificant and you have a felony unregistered assault weapon on your hands.
(Full Disclosure: my company makes products for Featureless rifles, as pictured above.)

I would move to a state that doesn't have such strict gun control laws, like Oklahoma or Texas.
The people that declared that a Pistol Grip or a Thumbhole Stock or a Folding/Telescoping Stock or a Flash Suppressor, etc, make a gun any more or less lethal are idiots and you would be better off getting out of there before they try to take away all of your guns.
I know california has some great weather and some good hunting from what I understand, but its full of whack jobs, especially in the southern part of the state.
Thank you very much for the help. I guess I am going to have to live with a 10 shot magazine and a tool for removing it because I love the way the pistol grip looks. but, GroundSwatter I would love to move out of California except I'm a college student and for now my parents are paying for my schooling. They told me if I left the state for school I would have to pay the difference from a California school and whatever school I attended out of state. Plus, the duck hunting where I'm at is phenomenal. I just wish California politics weren't so ridiculous. I think I'm going to go to some different sporting goods stores and see what they have. I'm looking at this website and thinking the second one down by Stag Arms is pretty sweet. Let me know what you think http://www.lanworldinc.com/Stag.htm
And thanks again for the help.
Stag's a good brand. My first AR-15 was a fixed mag Stag-15.
Leaving is an option for some. I did it. But just remember that every black rifle that gets shipped into CA causes another gun-grabbing legislator to wet their pants. That's a worthy goal. As long as you're in CA you might as well have as many black rifles as you can own. It makes it a lot harder to ban them later if they're in common use.
k-list do you know of any good forums or websites that would help me with building an ar-15. I've never built a gun before and it seems like something I would like to try. Any help would be appreciated.
the only cal legal thing you will need is a bullet button and a 10 round clip
btw- if youre under 21, you cant buy a stripped lower, but you can buy a lower reciever assembly, and from del-ton the upper comes pre assembled. when i specked out a complete lower it came to be 340 or so, but i upgraded the trigger.
instead, since i turned 21, i just bought a complete assembly and lower and will do the rest my self
We have an alternate version of our product that we're test marketing. Shown here with an adjustable stock, that would have to be pinned nonadjustable for CA use. Just another option if you want to run 30 rounders and drop the mags with your finger:
