What would you pick

Postby don taylor » Wed Aug 11, 2010 1:51 pm

Its a rare occasion that I break out any rifles these days, but this weekend I've been invited to attend a varmit hunt with some small prizes for the largest animal, ect. I would never consider it during duck season and will probably regret not spending the day scouting, but I'm going to go anyways.

The primary target is going to be woodchucks with a chance at a coyote and a feral hog/boar. We are hunting in one of the few areas in Pa reported to have a boar population. I'm going to have to re-read the regs just to make sure, I think the laws may have changed. Anyways, dogs are still on the board.

Here are my choices I'm considering...

Ruger 77/22 mag/32 gr. Vmax
Ruger 22 mag pistol/scoped
Custom Mauser .243/58 gr. Hornady's
Browning BLR .308 with 150 gr federal fusions.

I'm very confident with any of these guns and they all have great glass on them. The .243 being the best with a 6x24x50 leupold VX-II. Downside to the 243 is that its not sighted in for these 3800 fps rounds and I'm betting I'd need to spend a couple shells getting it dead on. The Ruger 22 mag rifle is the only thing I've ever won at a gun bash, figures its a 700 buck 22 mag. Its a tackdriver to 100 and 150, that I know of I've never tried further. The BLR I only have deer loads for, nothing smaller. It shoots great, but isn't the finesse rifles like the other 2 are.

I also don't have issue using small bullets to get the job done, I'm a headshot man.

My longest shot would be 200 yards 90% of the time.

What would you carry?

Thanks, I'll take what you guys pick.

22 mag or 243. Never saw the point in shooting big bullets at small game. The pistil may be fun but if you get a long shot I would want the range. i would take the 22 mag over the 243 just cause its cheaper though.

22 is enough for coyotes with a well placed bullet, witness it a handful of times. i dont think it will be enough for boar but i wouldnt no. no exprience in them at all.

id probably go with the .243 though. i use a .223 on small game cus im one of those that feels like caliber should make up for a "slip-up." bad shots happen, so many variable.

def wouldnt go .308. your lossing valueable meat weight for being judged!

regardless: you should put a few shells threw any gun you havent shot in sometime

.243 is probably best, but if you are accurate to 150 with the Ruger .22WM, you would probably be okay with that. I suspect there will be a lot of drop between 150 and 200 yds with it, and it may not have much energy left. Fine for woodchucks and dogs, but might not be able to take out a hog at long range, even with a head shot.
