Its a rare occasion that I break out any rifles these days, but this weekend I've been invited to attend a varmit hunt with some small prizes for the largest animal, ect. I would never consider it during duck season and will probably regret not spending the day scouting, but I'm going to go anyways.
The primary target is going to be woodchucks with a chance at a coyote and a feral hog/boar. We are hunting in one of the few areas in Pa reported to have a boar population. I'm going to have to re-read the regs just to make sure, I think the laws may have changed. Anyways, dogs are still on the board.
Here are my choices I'm considering...
Ruger 77/22 mag/32 gr. Vmax
Ruger 22 mag pistol/scoped
Custom Mauser .243/58 gr. Hornady's
Browning BLR .308 with 150 gr federal fusions.
I'm very confident with any of these guns and they all have great glass on them. The .243 being the best with a 6x24x50 leupold VX-II. Downside to the 243 is that its not sighted in for these 3800 fps rounds and I'm betting I'd need to spend a couple shells getting it dead on. The Ruger 22 mag rifle is the only thing I've ever won at a gun bash, figures its a 700 buck 22 mag. Its a tackdriver to 100 and 150, that I know of I've never tried further. The BLR I only have deer loads for, nothing smaller. It shoots great, but isn't the finesse rifles like the other 2 are.
I also don't have issue using small bullets to get the job done, I'm a headshot man.
My longest shot would be 200 yards 90% of the time.
What would you carry?
Thanks, I'll take what you guys pick.
