i have a 44 mag 8 1/2 inch barrel revolver and wondered if i could get a gunsmith to shortin the barrel. it has a ribbed barrell

Don't ruin a taurus! Buy a snub nose from a pawn shop if you want a short revolver...

i was thinkin about making it the same as a 4 inch 444 modle tauras . i can not aford to by a new gun.

I would just warn you... if it is a shooter and has no problems you should probably hang on to it. My experience with taurus has been hit and miss. You might not be so lucky with another one. Most gunsmiths would probably opt just to replace the barrel rather than shorten the existing one figuring the cost of the barrel and gunsmith fees you might be 1/2 way to just buying another one.
