Finally got my testing done and what a job! I did not know that the short barrel raises hell with the slower powders and that primers can even change fps form day to day on the same load per temps, humidity, full moon, what ever !! ??
Had one load that chronyed out at 9.5 fps +/- one time and 3 weeks later was 69 fps +/-. Tested out 5 types of small pistol
primers and 7 types of powders and it came down to most loads working out better with the federal 100 primer in most loads
and Bullseye and w231 for the light 148hbwc target loads , Trail Boss for the light 158 Lswc target loads and and Best over all
powder with the highest fps and least amout of velosity spread per 5 shots was....... Red Dot, in my mod 49 1 7/8" tube.
Bullseye and my lot of w231, lacked fps in bullets over 148grs........... Powders slower than Unique had wide fps readings and probably a huge muzzle flash at night?
the 158 Lhp FBI load with Unique gave the highest velosity of 851fps but also had a very heavy recoil that was very unpleasant.
I tried the 110 jhp bullet but it would not calm down and get a steady reading for 38 spl loads or light +p but Unique had it at a steady 1034fps that was only 144 fps too fast for my light weight 38 and the recoil of a 158gr FBI load.
Will do the water test and target point of impact in the next outtings...............to see what bullets come out on top of the heat. 148hbwc, 125jhp, 135 GD, 140 xtp, 158 target and FBI. If they don't hit where you aim, they are no good to me.
