Did you know that 50-60 million buffalo roamed the great plains.
They were shot for their hide and tongues and meat and some Buffalo hunters killed as many as 250 a day .
Some even used the 45-110 , the king of the buffalo guns. By 1884 there were only 1,200-2,000 surviving buffalo.
The Hawkens 33-36 inch barrel, .54 cal was capable of 400 yards shots and even had a .68 cal ball rifle but was later replaced by the open gate single shot 50-60 Spencer, which was more accurate and had a faster loading time.
In 1874, Billy Dixon at Adobe Walls Texas, with the use of the 50-90 Sharp, shot an Indian off a hourse at the estimated range
(shortest) of 1028 yards. Before that time it was said to be good to 500 yards, for a bullet only going 1200 fps.
Just thought this might be interresting to some...............
