S&W handgun ID

Postby beretta24 » Fri Oct 26, 2012 9:25 pm

I found out my grandmother has an older Smith and Wesson double action revolver. The S/N, or least what I think the is the S/N on the bottom of the butt, is 120XXX. The hammer and trigger have an almost blued finish while the rest looks like a nickel type finish. It has a trigger guard. The last patent date listed on the barrel is Jan 3, 1982. Can anyone tell me where I can get some more info on this. The finish has a few bad spots and the barrel looks rough, but it may be possible to clean it up.

Thanks,
Brian

It should have the cal. on the barrel and a model number on the yoke when you open the cylinder, which can
help you in finding out what it is.............if it is a tip open, probably a 32 cal. which needs to be checked over by a
gunsmith before using.

Some of the older revolvers had the ser# under the top strap, some on the yoke, some you had to take the grips off, since they were on the frame of the handle. They are either a .32 or a .38 cal...............if you can figure that out you have deleated about 5,000 guns in your search.
Cal of the gun, black, stainless, length of barrel, SA,Double Action ,fixed sights, adj. sights, 3 screws,4 screw gun (frame)........all can help narrow down your search.

Good luck.
