Mossberg 100 atr .270

Postby talltimber » Sun Jan 05, 2014 9:41 pm

My daughter and sil bought one for me or Christmas. Has anyone had one and have any reviews on it? I know you don't have to spend 800 to get a shooter but idk anyone who has one of these personally. It came with a scope package but its getting replaced with a better scope. Hoping it will make a truck gun. With this scope and less than 20 rounds, shooting about a 1.5" group at 50 yds. with both Win PowerPoint 130 and 150 gr. If it will get to about 2 moa eventually I think my buddy can work up some 110 gr for coyotes that will work. I'll likely never shoot at a deer more than 50 yds or so.

Trigger is really nice, no adjustment necessary yet. Way lighter than anything I've shot, and no creep.

I would find a good 130 grain load and stick with that. if you can get 110s to group for you well n good they should be very devastating on yotes,I know the hornady hps I used were on wallabies of similar size.
the 130s should kick less than 150s and that does make a difference to your mind set when getting to know your rifle, also check the trigger pull isnt too heavy as most come from factory waay to heavy for practicle shooting. 2-4lbs is any gods amount enough.

try nosler ballistic tips in 130grn. they work well in my old smoke pole and have a very very very good name for grouping well in hunting rifles.

Using 130s now. Round count at 40ish. 50 yd groups down to 3/4" already with factory ammo. Buddy is gonna reload some 130 sst's for me to try. He's confident he can get me to 1 moa. I put a Nikon monarch 3 4-16x42 with mildot reticle on it. I think it helped some too.

Well those didn't work out real well. Will have to try a different bullet maybe. 3-4" @ 100. Shot one group with factory ammo that was 2-3/4" one time.
Maybe keep it for a close deer gun, and go buy a 223 or 243 for a truck/ yote gun?

From what I've read these rifles are capible of 1" and under at 100 yards. Check it over well. Is the barrel free floating? Are the scope mounts torqued correctly. If all this is correct polish the barrel. You should be doing beter than that. Are you shooting a clod barrel? These thin barel heat up quickly and will open the groups after thre shots.

That's where I'm at. Possibly could have to have the action bedded to do much more, idk yet. I'm gonna check to see if maybe the barrel is getting into the stock. Free floated at rest. Scopes good, used a fat wrench. The last session was 1 min plus between shots and shot a 2-3/4" group at 50 yds. Lol
Something's going on. A buddy said it scatters bullets like a wildwoman shits. Haha

If you are shooting more than 3 shots before letting the barrel cool down you are doing yourself injustice. You should shoot a couple rounds through it put it down pick up a.22 and blaze away for a while. The most important shot will be the first out of a cold barrel.

I got the opportunity to be rid of it and help my daughter and sil at the same time. I jumped all over that.
The search continues. Thinking of savage 10 PC in .223 this time around.
