What do you carry, and how?

Postby fenton_3 » Mon Dec 15, 2008 1:21 pm

I was at Cabelas the other day and I over heard a sale person behind the gun counter trying to sell an older gentlemen "who had no expirence with handguns" a Kimber .45 for his carry gun! I am wondering am I under gunned. I carry a Kahr MK40 durring the winter and a Kel-tec p32 durring the summer. The MK holds 6rds and I dont carry an extra mage, the Kel-tec holds 8 and again I dont carry an extra mag. The reasoning behind my choice is that this is a defence weapon and if I am being attached and cannot hit them with the first six all the others will be a waste anyway. What is with people carrying full size Glock 17 and 1911's? How would you even hid a gun that size comfortably? This is where the second part of my question comes in. How do you carry, and not print? The Kel-tec can be hidden anywhere, and the Kahr can be be carried in my pocket or in the small of my back with ease. How would one carry a full size glock 17 with shorts and a tee shirt on? This is what I wear durring the summer!

Please shed some of your wisdom on this subject.

Thanks

5" 1911 winter, 3.5 or 4" 1911 in summer.

IWB, 3:30 position.

A good holster makes all the difference.

Summer S&W 38 spl J Frame IWB 2:00 position or in my pocket, loaded with Remington GS +p . Winter and summer a HK USP 45 compact in a Galco @ 3:00 covered by a t-shirt or jacket and loaded with remington GS or Speer gold dot 200gr +p. This weekend I carreid my XD 5" tactical 45acp loaded with Hornady TAP +P ammo Just to give it a break from the safe. I am not a fan of a 32acp, to many storys of poor penetration thru jackets or coats and my own test with my NAA 32 prooved to me that I would not stake my life on it if I had other options. If I had to choose only one gun it would be my 45acp's. after you carry one for a few years you get used to having it and can cover it pretty easy.

I had a Kahr k-40 elite 98 and it was a great carry gun but heavy for its size and very snappy to shoot.

The best gun for defense is the one you have when you need it. I have heard the saying that a 22 in your pocket is better than a 44 in the safe.

I carry a XD 40-4inch on duty and off with a el paso saddlery holster it disappears with no problem

I also carry a 1911 off duty but only in the winter thing is full size and hard as hell to keep concealed I also carry SW J frame 38 in the summer front pocket or on my ankle

keep in mind its not the physical size of the gun that makes it more powerful

there is a Kimber 1911 45 cal that you can almost cover with your hand great carry gun with lots of knock down

if you can only have one get a 40 or a 45 get a good compact one and you will not have a problem

with the right ammo 38 is a great gun get a good +P with what ever you choose get a good light gun heavy hard to conceal guns more often then not end up in the safe and never move gun in the safe is point less

that said carry where ever you go and be safe

snub 38...

Auto 40.............

that the "New era" of guns

Small and quick or big and lots of ammo, is what it is all about now.

With the Speer Gold Dot the 38 is now up to snuff with the big boys for self defence...................almost.

The 125hp 357 mag is still a great load and man stopper, for a small caliber bullet................. but the 40 and 45 will always do the job, just hope your new car is in the back ground !!

In Maryland all you can do is hold your gland in your hand. Criminals got more rights in this state than the victims. You guys are lucky.

Lots of great feedback, but when I put my Kahr in a IWB holster and a tee shirt I feel like I am printing to much. I am 5'8" and 200 LBS, so I am not skinny by any means. Am I just being to critical?

I carry my Kel-Tec 380 in my pocket everywhere. I love it because it's so small but I often think about buying something with more of a punch like the small kimber.

Bingo!

Same as me, except I carry a gov't model all year. A strong, quality belt and an IWB makes the thin profile of a 1911 dissapear in even T- shirt and jeans.

I also try to carry an extra mag. Not just for the extra ammo, but in case of a magazine failure.

2 mags, left side, 8:30.

I agree...be prepared. Good mags do help, but ya never know. I'm partial to Chip McCormicks and Wilson.

Kinda on the same topic...but what do you guys think is the best all around carry handgun? I was thinking about getting a beretta or XD .40 or 9mm compact. What do you think?

of those you listed, I would go with the XD 40. 9mm is a fine round but not a top choice for self defence. the 40 or 45 is much better at the intended task.

Glock 22 on duty (plainclothes), spare mag in a mag/cuff case combo, with a S&W 60 on my ankle and a Bianchi speed strip full of gold dots in my left pocket

At a minimum, the Smith goes in my right front pocket off duty, the speed strip stays in the left pocket.

I used to carry a Kahr Elite 98, 9mm. It was an excellant gun, very well made and accurate......but I let my brother talk me out of it. For the folks that are unsure about a 9mm, the advances in ammo in the last few years have made the 9mm a very viable self defense cartridge.
I'd MUCH rather see someone carry a 9mm that they can actually shoot well, than a .45 they can't hit a barn with.... and are only toting because some self proclaimed expert told them that it was the only gun that real men carried.

Springfield XD 4" .45 ACP w/a DeSantis IWB holster at the 6 o'clock in the winter. I'll probably end up buying a Beretta Tomcat .32 for Summer since we can't buy the LCP in CA.
