.325wsm is what I shoot. Of the two listed I would get a .338 federal.

.300 win mag. It will easily take down anything here in North America and most stuff in Africa. It's also flatter shooting. If I'm not mistaken a .300 is a .338 necked down to .308. I'll go check my reloading manuals and find out.

Pick up a 300 Wetherby flatter shooting then a Win Mag. What the 300's lack in bullet weight from a 338, they make up in speed.

Dont know what you plan on shooting but if your looking for punch go 338 win mag. If you really want a punch go 338 ultra mag!!!

300win is a little more difficult to reload because it has a shorter neck than the 338win. I also like the 300 weatherby over 300win. All of the cartridges have been around for years, I am hesitant about the newer ones. How long will they make them? Will finding ammo be a problem? My uncle had a 32 Remington, they stopped making that ammo years ago and the gun wasn't really that old when they stopped.

What's wrong with that? I've been saying that for years. There's a guy at work that does the booking for African Safaris and A LOT of people (including him) hunt down there with a .300 WM. The only thing I have against .300 wby mag is that its quite a bit more expensive and harder to find. Chances are no matter where you hunt you will find someone with a .300 win mag, so if you forget your ammo you could probably borrow some, or at least buy some from somewhere.

The real question is...what do you plan on hunting with it? Obviously many different animals but I would not want to shoot smaller deer, antelope etc. with a .338. I own one and only use it for Elk, Moose, Caribou etc. So if you are hunting smaller game with it as well...go with the .300.

Just my two cents....

I don't work at gander either, but I have to agree with preach on this. 300 Win Mag is popular and you can buy it almost anywhere, 300 wby mag, not so much. 338 seems overkill for most of what north america has to offer. If you have an african safari coming up, I might look at the 338, but 300 win mag seems like a better round for North America.

But with all that being said, you could avoid making a decision and get both.

Still need to know what he is going to be hunting. But anything short of elk or grizzly bear, I would vote for one of the 300 mags.

A .300 win mag will kill them too. There are a bunch of people that have killed every game animal in North America with a .30/'06, I reckon the .300 would get it done too.

Between the 2, I'd get the .338. I have a .338 Win Super grade, but it's too much for deer and pretty powerful for elk. had to up the bullet weight to slow it down a little but still makes a lot of shock waste. I've gone back to using my old pre '64 mod 70 .270 for everything and am saving the .338 for big stuff ... greater Columbian ground squirrels.

didn't you already get a 44 mag for whitetails? should have gotten a 7mm mag for everything and be done... unless you're going for cape buffalo.

My guess is yes. I'd say you were using a premium bullet in your '06 and they were either using hand loaded varmint rounds or junky cheap crap.

I'd buy a .416 Barrett if I were in the market for a new hunting rifle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.416_Barrett

But if you're set on the .300 market I would probably consider the .300 weatherby because of it's superior ballistics.
