AR-15 caliber

Postby lameduck » Tue Mar 10, 2009 8:22 pm

I am looking to get an ar-15 for killing hogs. I had a ar in .223 and killed a few hogs with it but I want more knock down power. The question is should I go with a ar-10 in .308 or a big bore ar-15 (.450,.458,.50). I would love to get a big bore ar-15 but i am worried the ammo will become scarce if they are banned agian.

If money isn't a factor get the .50 AE. That would be a fun gun. Definetley enough power for hogs. If you can get them now legaly, you will always be able to get/ reload that ammo. They can't take that away. But if you're looking for something more practicle, I'd go with the 7.62x51mm NATO (.308) Welcome to the black rifle market.

i'd go with the .308 , best round there is in my opinion ! plus it is a NATO round so it will always be avaliable !

if your hunting hogs and doing a lot of walking I would not go with the 308. Most weigh in the 10 to 11lb range (without a red dot or scope) and that is too heavy to be toteing around the woods all day. If you are stand hunting then the 308 would be fine IMO. I would look at the 30 remington that they are chambering in their AR's (by DPMS) I have been doing a lot of reading on this round and it looks like it will be a good Deer round and being that remington is loading it, It will not be high priced like some of the custom loads and it will work in a Standard AR mag with a slight mod to the feed lips. you can also get a 7.62x39 upper for your ar and there are several hunting loads available for that along with cheap plinking ammo.
