General purpose lens

Postby Whitehorse » Sun Aug 08, 2010 10:09 pm

I have a canon and am looking into upgrading my factory lens... i think it's like a 18-55 mm 3,5-5.6..........

I'm looking for an older lense or maybe one that isn't canon brand, but one that will do well. The range isn't too big of a deal, i'd be ok from 18 up to 75 or so, but I want a quicker lense, and better glass.

Can anyone help me? I would like it around $500 or less, there are prob. OLD but GOOD lens setups that I just don't know about!

Thanks!

You could try the older Siggy 28-125 starts at F2.8 to ? (I can't remember) I had tried it out and it was good at the low end.
There is a Tammy 18-70n F2.8 I think
Many of my friends are ranting about the Tammy 18-270 F3.5-6.3 as an all around walkabout lens nice and light fits most budgets

For 500, I think you're better off getting the Canon 50mm 1.4. It's a fast lens and tack sharp. Also, if you canon has a crop factor of 1.6, this will be zoomed in compare to when this lens is used in a full frame.

well I found a guy selling lenses for 150 a pop, and ended up getting an 85 prime 1.8. 100 mm macro 2.8, and a zoom 28?-120? but is like a 3.5

I have also reciently purchased a 50 mm 1.8.... I just can't decide if it is worth a few extra hundred bucks to go 1.4!!

now i'm doing little odd end jobs.. portraits, family pics, senior pics, and weddings.... just wish they would make a fast zoom for a reasonable price....

The f1.4 is not worth it the 1.8 should suffice.
I think now you should invest in a quality flash and a remote shutter release.
Going to a fast long focal zoom is another can of worms worth lots of money.
On the other end if you are going to trake pics of inside homes where the wide angle lens
is to be used and the kit lens is just not wide and sharp enough..that is also another barrel of cash
for say a 10-20 sigma.
You did well on the intermediate money making lens

yea, all i'm missing is that wide angle... i'm selling a couple right now to fund it!

I have a 70-300 but it's a crappy f4 canon usm... paid like 500 for it, and it's worthless, i'm going to th 2.8 200mm canon and crop it or something maybe, but the glass on that lense I have is crap past 30 yards
