taken with my wifes Rebel XS, 55-250mm F4-5.6, first time out with this lens. was late afternoon, not the greatest light, and these pictures are cropped. seems like even with the 250mm, you can never get too close!

i'll go up to about a grand. i have been looking on amazon.com mostly. i saw a 70-300mm that was very compact. had a green ring around it. have also seen L glass in the 70 - 200mm range but i think i want to get in the 300mm range. which in L glass I probably cant afford!

on a side note i only spent about a grand on my wife's entire set up (the rebel XS with kit lens, fixed 50mm 1.4, 55-250mm 4.0-5.6).

thanks

Check out third party glass used like the Sigma Bigma or tamron the 70-300 is little weak in focal length and IQ

What about a 400 prime? There is another thread I see asking about it compared to 1-400mm. For shooting fowl most of time I am at 400mm and wishing for more. Up to a grand should be able to get you a 400 prime. The 55-250mm is a good piece of glass for kit glass but you will really see the difference in IQ when you go to the 400L plus you get the reach you want......of course you will find you will want more reach before long even with the 400L :lol3:

a buddy of mine had recommended looking into a 300 prime, I will also definitely check out the 400. thanks for the suggestion.... on a side note my wife is looking forward to photographing hummingbirds, the 55-250 will get a workout then, i'm hoping it works well with a tripod from the porch.

Just remind her to take turn the image stabilizer off while on the tripod and she should be good

I am a Sony shooter and primes are the way to I tried out a Sony 400G and man what a difference in pulling power and image IQ
but that was only a tryout...and wishfull thinking cost $1600 the Bigma 50-500mm by Sigma would be ok at $1100 new would be right focal length.

Rem the bigma would be a good piece of glass for range and I have seen some great pics with it but the IQ in head up comparisons just don't compared to the 400 prime. I personally would go with the prime for the IQ.

The 400 prime is really sharp but the Bigma is $400-500 cheaper and the pictures are ok, not super sharp.
personally I would go with the Mirror Refex AF f8 or $700 but could be had for $350-400 used only in Minolta other makes of mirror lens is a toss up from junk to so so but some Russian mirrors are fantastic with proper adaptors going manual

Really!?!?!? get the best glass you can afford.
Saving $400-500 for OK pictures that are not supper sharp is the WORST advice!

You are right, you hit the wall as you have choices for ok pictures for $400-500 now for your information the Sigma Bigma 50-500 retails for $1000-1100 which is not cheap and you can better than ok pictures, fine for small chickadees with it .The 400L prime is jut a tad sharper and has better colors but retails for $400-500 more

In my personal opinion i wouldnt waste money on a tamron or any of the sorts. Buy a canon lens in the range you want with the lowest app you can afford. A canon 70-200 2.8 is a good zoom or a 300 fixed

I wound up with a Sigma 400mm 5.6 APO and it is a real winner from Adorama for about $300 to my door. It is a bit better than my Minolta 75-300. Sigma makes a 400mm lens for canon for about $350 with tripod mount for canon. |These are used lens read the reviews, with my 1.4 tel-converter and tripod it is still ok, some of my recent pics are on this site. Remember you have an older camera and I wouldn't spend that money a grand on the lens unless you would be upgrading to a t2i. I have a sony a550 upgraded from a200 and now have money for a good macro lens a ..soon a nice tamron 90mm sharp. my bag has a lens for every event and these rate 4,3 -4.65 on dyxum.com.

I shoot a canon t3i with a 70-300mm and I would love to have a fixed 400mm but the 70-300mm gets the job done. This photo was shot with that lens.

I completely disagree with this. A good solid Canon lens, as recommend by others here will out live most camera bodies and will be a lens to keep long after his 30d (not a bad camera at all, one worth keeping for awhile).

When you buy a camera body, you're buying into the manufacturer's whole lens system. Wisely, he chose a Canon (I'd also recommend Nikon) so he'll have a large selection of quality lenses to choose from over the years to come.

Rem, I know you love your Sony, and I know you love your big bag full of cheap, so-so lenses, I just don't subscribe to the same mentality. I'd rather have a good camera body and 3 or 4 Solid, quality, and versatile lenses that will last for years to come and produce excellent pictures without compromise.

$1000 isn't a bad price to spend on a lens when you plan to keep that lens and it's a fast, quality piece of glass.

I have the 100mm f/2.8 (non-L) macro lens. It's a terrific lens, but it doesn't get used as much as my other lenses. Also, you can save some money by getting a 50mm 1.8 with a 25mm extension tube. You get nearly the same effect as the 100mm macro and it's super sharp.

I'm happy to send you some examples of the 50mm with extension tubes and some shots of the of 100mm to compare.

I've got the 70-300 EF as my zoom lens on my 60D. I shopped around online and got it for quite a bit less than buying it here in town (about 470 brand new) and it's really been a great lens for being so reasonably priced. All my photos I've posted on here have been taken with that lens. I was thinking about getting the Sigma 150-500mm lens but opted out of it being my only zoom lens. I'm still thinking about adding it to the collection however, you can find them for 1000 bucks all day long online and they are very comparable to the Canon 100-400 from what many reviews say.

Congrats on your Canon...it's a good system—proven and prevalent. Given the crop factor on the sensor size any EF lens you choose will seem to shoot longer, meaning a 400mm EF will shoot like a 600mm. I use an aging rebel xsi (that will be replaced with a 7d, mainly to keep the crop factor and make my lenses longer). My long lens is the canon 100-400mm L IS ($1600), which produces well in good light. I've used Tamron and Sigma and do not like the build quality, noisy auto focus and jerky focus rings. If you can afford a prime 400 then definitely get it. Primes out perform zooms any day as far as IQ (but they're heavy, costly and not flexible). I round out my lenses with a 100mm f2.8 macro ($500) (great portrait lens too) and a 17-55mm EFS f2.8 ($1000) for general purpose. Good luck and happy shooting!

Most serious waterfowl photographers have the Canon 100-400L lens in their bag. The lens is a bit more than the $1000 you are talking, but this is a "go to" lens for many waterfols photographers.

Whatever you buy,buy the BEST you can afford. If anyone tells you that the body and it's features are the most important part of photgraphy, they're full of crap. The lens and the photographers knowledge of how to use his gear, makes the photos. Most bodies will do pretty much the same thing unless you're talking about a pro body, like the 1D series.
Spend the $$ on a good lens and learn to use you're gear!

You also need to get a good photo editing program and learn to use it. I tend to lean towards Photoshop Elements. It doesnt have all the features of the full blown photoshop, but unless you're a graphic artist, you dont really need all those bells and whistles. If you're looking for free, try Picassa. It's pretty easy to use because it's pretty basic, but it IS free.

Congrats 30D is good solid camera. I shot one for years. I just recently upgraded to a used 50D and its slightly better but i wouldnt hesitate to grab the 30D. I shot it with the 400 L Prime almost all the time. I have a published several photos with that same combo so dont let anyone make you think you got to have the latest and greatest to take good photos. I have one coming up on the inside front cover of the NC Wildlife magazine in Jan in fact with that same setup.
With that being said I upgraded due to the 5.6 can be kind of slow in morning light for birds in Flight. And the 30D struggles to keep up a little with the newer cameras at higher ISOs. So with the higher pixel count which allows a little tighter crop and slightly better ISO performance i decided to ugrade to the 50D. But probably took 75k shots with the ole 30D.
As far as lenses I struggled between the 400 prime and 100-400. I chose the 400 due to the fact in reviews the 400 prime is slightly better with BIF, plus its lighter etc. However I have since used the 100-400 photographing whitetails and loved it. I havnt tried it on BIF though so I cant speak o that. But the IS on the 100-400 really helps.
If I had to 1k to spend on a lens it prob would be a used 400 prime. Especialy if you want to photo waterfowl alot. 400 will not be long enough you will wish it was 600 all the time almost ha.

Here is a few I shot with the 400 and 30d.

rented the 400mm f/5.6 during the week of thanksgiving, went to bosque del apache NWR and took pics of sandhill cranes and snow geese. file size on pics too big to post here without serious cropping, but the lens did well in good light at fast shutter speeds, as one would expect. i still want to rent the 300mm f/4 IS. that lens with 1.4x TC would make it = 420mm f/5.6 and with IS.... .

on a different note, I recently bought my wife the 10-22mm for her b-day, another great addition to the bag.
