400mm or 100-400mm

Postby furrycrown » Sat Mar 05, 2011 10:51 pm

Wanting to upgrade my lenses. I have the Canon 70-200L f2.8 but wanting to get in the 400mm range. Trying to decide on either the 400mmL 5.6 or the 100-400mmL zoom. Anyone with some input would be great. Looking at mostly shooting waterfowl pics.

Thanks Greg

From the image comparisons the 400 was sharper at the 400 focal length

I have the 1-400mm and love it. I don't do it justice with my skills but I have got lucky and got a few amazing pics with it. Now when fowling I do spend almost every minute at 400 mm. If I only used the lens for fowl I would more then likely go with the 400L due to the slight edge with IQ. Being a father of 2 kids and 3 dogs I do really like the versatility of and have the need for the 100-400mm.
