Am I about to get burned (Nikon D5000)?

Postby mox » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:43 pm

I have found a used Nikon D5000 bundle for sale - $750.
Its all less that a year old. Its got the standard 18-55mm VR Lens and includes a Nikkor 55-200mm (Non VR) Zoom Lens, a lowepro bag, 16 gb mem. card, original box/cables, etc...

So... I noticed Wal-Mart has this EXACT bundle for $761 out the door. I do not do business with Wal-Mart, but I plan to use their price to talk the guy with the used D5000 down on his price.

Is $600 for this USED bundle a low ball?

I'm going with a used/mint condition camera in order to have some bargaining room with my wife for a 70-300 before next goose season.

I hope the 52 viewers all thought $600 was a good idea, because I'm now the owner of that camera. Its in near perfect condition from what I can tell. Time to start studying...

Recommendations on how to go about diving in to the wonderful world of (D)SLRs?

Are you sure it is less than a year old as the Nikon D5000 came out in 2009.
Check to see if the 55-200 non VR is motorized focus because the camera body does not have a motor, all your future lens must have a motor to focus or you can use manual focus plus a built in type of range finder.
The cheapest new one is $569 with kit lens. I would say you got a fair deal.
Shop wisely for your next lens I would not go for the 70-300 as it not long enough to do any serious birding. It is ok in the park

It was originally purchased from ritzcamera.com. I'm thinking he meant it was less than a year old to him, not necessarily model-wise. Thank you for the note on the model year though.
Yes, both lenses are motorized focus.
If the 70-300 isn't long enough what do you recommend as far as 40-50 yd shots?
