Yeah, They suck! Here in Baghdad they walk you onboard while the engnes are running. There's a point just before you actually climb on board where you swear to God your clothes are going to burst into flames. You lose ten pounds of water weight waiting for the thing to take off. They don't give you any air until they get up on plane. Then they turn off the iar before they land and you start sweating all over agin. Not to mention you're packed in like sardines. Did I mention it gets a little hot over here during the summer? :crying:

I'll never complain about Delta again!!

All the crying aside, it's not that bad. Beats the hell out of a two-three hour rotary flight hopping from one FOB to the next working your way to the one you want.

I was on a C17 coming up from Ali Al Salem a couple of weeks ago. Now that was a terrible experience. Same heat problems, but this flight couldn't get it's rear ramp up. We sat on the Tarmack for two hours before take off. Temps were well over 120 (guessing). Probably even hotter on the inside of that plane. They had a side door open to, but it didn't help.
During take off just at the point where I thought we were going airborne the engine flutters and the pilot aborts the take off. Now I know people at six flags pay real good money to get that "rush" feeling, I personally thought it was over rated! I don't know how many of you guys (or gals) have gone through this kind of experience, but to be very truthful with you, I was more than a little nervous. I wasn't alone either!

We finally got airborne and they never did turn the air on. I lost so much water weight I had the worse headache of my life, and I've only had maybe three headaches in my entire life. I don't get them, but I did that day. I'm surprised somebody didn't fall out.

War's hell, huh boys?

Been there done that SGM, last time I deployed we flew over bagdad TWICE because we had DV's that need to get somewhere else first. Man i'd was beat as it was then fly here wait fly here wait, I was like just give me a damn shoot and i'll jump. But no once its all over with its not that bad. Alot of crap we go through that worse than flying, thats just part of the journey.

it takes bleed air to cool the cockpit, which robs power from the airplane. sometimes the power is more important than the comfort, like combat landings and short-field takeoffs. Also you have to close the bleed air when operating on dirt.

The engine oil won't cool properly with the engines down-sped, so if engine oil temps are high, engine running on-loads can be a bit hot and windy.

the Herk is no luxury airliner, but it will get you in and out of places that most aircraft can't.
