Benelli SBE II & Kicks .665 Gobblin Thunder?

Postby redneck47441 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 4:46 pm

Anyone else using this setup? I've shot all 3.5" shells 4,5,& 6 shot Winchester super X. 6 shot is patterning the best but not sure if it could be better. I've never gun hunted turkey only bow. So if anyone else is using this setup and let me know what shot your using to see if I could get better. Would 3" shells pattern better at 40 yards than 3.5"?

From my experience, 3.5" shells don't pattern as good as 3". But that depends on your gun/choke configuration.
I shoot an SBEII with Indian Creek choke.

The only problem with a Kicks is they do not approve there chokes for heavier than lead shot other than Win Xtended range.. I have shot countless rounds of Hevi through a Kicks but that is topic for another discussion..

3 vs 3.5- Some guns prefer one or the other.. Undoubtedly the really big number patterns come from 3.5 but typically out of a 835 or INV+ gun do to the backbore and overbore.. Your benelli has a snug bore and will most likely digest 3 inch payloads better because of it..

Ammo- Stay with 6s.. If you want to try and improve your patterns get the XTD range 6s.. They typically like a fuzz tighter choke, but they should still serve you better than lead..

Another option would be the Win HV 1300FPS loads.. These ime are the best patterning lead load available. The Sup XX also patterns really well.

I use a SBE II but I don't get too caught up in the special chokes and ammo stuff. Full choke with 5's seems to pepper their heads sufficiently as long as I don't shoot when they're too far away ... beyond 40 yards.

I've got a SBE II with a I-Mod Comp-N-Choke in it. Patterns like mad for duck ... and I put it back in the closet for turkey. I'm shooting a 20" barrel'd Rem 870 pump with a X-Full factory choke and it's slaughtered Toms up to 45 yards stone cold dead.

Granted, the SBE will work fine, I just don't want to pattern 6 different chokes to figure out which one I need. My pockets got shallow this fall ... !
