Winchester Double X Turkey Loads

Postby mayhem96 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 7:49 pm

Does anyone shoot these new loads? I have heard good things about them and picked up a box today. I can't wait to pattern them!

I do not believe they are new? If your referring to the Supreme XX Red hulled load, they used to be great, along with the Win HV.. I had a short barreled 500 that would do 150 with the HV and 140 with the XX.. I chose the HV and they worked great.. Shortly after Win switched the wad and they fell on their face.. Cannot say if they changed wad in the XX.

I know it's late and most states are already closed but.....I have shot their XX magnums (red shells) for Y-E-A-R-S with great success but tried Hevi-shot 13 #6's this season and WOW is all I can say. On the range I get over 50 pellets in the head and neck at 50 yards compared to maybe 10 (if I got lucky) with the Winchesters. 8 gobblers died by them this year and a few were long shots. The damage they do is amazing. I also tried their Mega Blend but it didn't hold a pattern as well as the 6's past the 40 yard mark.....but both loads were far superior to the Win's. Also, I tried 2 different chokes where my Kicks .690 choke was better than the Hevi shot .669................out of a Mossberg 835.

This is one that I misjudged because of terrain. He ranged 61 yards, after the fact. His head looked about the same with PLENTY of holes. I always lean toward better being safer than sorry on the patterns for those...oops shots like this.

We shot the DoubleX 3" 2oz 5s this spring and killed a few turkeys with em. We didn't have turkey chokes, so that made us a little undergunned I felt, but they killed the birds? Next year we will have turkey chokes and do some patterning before we hit the woods... the reason we didnt this year was a time crunch and we had never hunted turkeys with guns before n weren't sure if we were gonna hunt or not...

In a week or so, I'll be patterning some 3 1/2 Double X #6's out of my Stoeger M3500 tipped with a Primos Jellyhead choke. I'll post my results. I'm getting after turkeys for the first time this year and I'm trying to get a good pattern.

The Double X's on my end didn't pattern very well at 40 yards. I only got 60 in a 10 inch circle. I'm looking for at least 100 but really want more. I'd look into the Winchester Longbeards. They have a new idea that has been proving itself on paper. I got some 3 inch #5's I plan on patterning this weekend if the temp is warm.

I patterned 200 in a 10 inch circle last weekend with Winchester LongBeard #5 3 inch at 40 yards. Ordered 2 more boxes before they ran out of stock.

Hevi13 is worth every penny for the turkey loads. I shoot 3.5'' #6 and they are devastating. Farthest shot on a turkey was 71 yards and the longbeard went straight down.

I do not shoot a 12 much anymore but have shot Hevi Shot or XTD range in every one since the very first year Hevi was available to the public in a 2 3/4 shell, all are being converted over to Longbeard.. From what I have seen on the patterning board so far, it wont be hard to do.
