Winchester Long Beard vs Supreme vs S-X Turkey load

Postby Joe Hunter » Wed Apr 02, 2014 9:13 am

How does Winchesters newest Long Beard XR Shot-Lok Turkey load measure-up against the Supreme High-Velocity Turkey and the Super-X Turkey loads when it comes to patterning performance?

Pattering results are from a 12-gauge 3" Remington 870 Special Purpose with a 26" barrel and a Remington Turkey Super Full Extended Choke (.063” constriction from bore gauge).

Pattern testing was done on 48” x 48” pattern sheets with a turkey head-and-neck target centered on each sheet. This turkey head-and-neck target provided an aim point and allowed for Skull/Cervical Vertebra Hit data for each pattern shot. The distance from muzzle to pattern was measured with a tape and then one pattern shot was fired at each of five pattern sheets with each load. Following the pattern shots, a 30” diameter pattern circle was centered over the densest portion of each pattern and the pellet strikes were counted. The five-shot average for pattern count, pattern percentage and S/CV Hits is shown in the figures below. Additionally, the in-shell pellet count is the average from five shells that were opened and counted.

12 GA 3" WINCHESTER LONG BEARD XR SHOT-LOK LEAD TURKEY LOAD
1 3/4 oz #5 lead (305 pellets, resin encased, copper coated) 1,200 fps
Remington Turkey Super Full Extended Choke (.063” constriction)
Distance -- 30” (%) / S/CV Hits
40 YARDS -- pattern 295 (97%) / 11.8
50 YARDS -- pattern 275 (90%) / 7.4

12 GA 3” WINCHESTER SUPREME HIGH-VELOCITY LEAD TURKEY LOAD
1 3/4 oz #5 lead (293 pellets, buffered, copper coated) 1,300 fps
Remington Turkey Super Full Extended Choke (.063” constriction)
Distance -- 30” (%) / S/CV Hits
40 YARDS -- pattern 257 (88%) / 5.8
50 YARDS -- pattern 170 (58%) / 2.0

12 GA 3” WINCHESTER SUPER-X LEAD TURKEY LOAD
1 7/8 oz #5 lead (317 pellets, buffered, copper coated) 1,210 fps
Remington Turkey Super Full Extended Choke (.063” constriction)
Distance -- 30” (%) / S/CV Hits
40 YARDS -- pattern 276 (87%) / 3.4
50 YARDS -- pattern 162 (51%) / 1.8

Now you can be the judge.

Good luck.

buddy has shot 2 birds with the Longbeards so far this year.......both right at about 30yds. both birds looked like their heads had been run through a meat grinder. he said one was even missing his entire lower beak and most of his upper beak. the pic below is the first bird, it actually was the better looking of the two, damage-wise. the other bird fared much worse

Nice test, you happen to count 10 inch circle differences?

ICED -- I did count the 10" hits at 50 yards and here are the averages from 5-shots of each.

12 GA 3" WINCHESTER LONG BEARD XR SHOT-LOK LEAD TURKEY LOAD
1 3/4 oz #5 lead (305 pellets, resin encased, copper coated) 1,200 fps
Remington Turkey Super Full Extended Choke (.063” constriction)
50 YARDS -- 10" circle / 89 hits

12 GA 3” WINCHESTER SUPREME HIGH-VELOCITY LEAD TURKEY LOAD
1 3/4 oz #5 lead (293 pellets, buffered, copper coated) 1,300 fps
Remington Turkey Super Full Extended Choke (.063” constriction)
50 YARDS -- 10" circle / 27 hits

12 GA 3” WINCHESTER SUPER-X LEAD TURKEY LOAD
1 7/8 oz #5 lead (317 pellets, buffered, copper coated) 1,210 fps
Remington Turkey Super Full Extended Choke (.063” constriction)
50 YARDS -- 10" circle / 28 hits

Now you can be the judge.

Good luck.

Very nice.. And to think with a factory choke.. That is the one thing about the longbeards they are extremely tolerant of gun and choke design.. One thing to note as well they can handle alot of constriction without blowing and it seems the tighter choke you go the tighter they tend to shoot.

No doubt the hits/pattern is there but since it's just copper washed lead has anyone checked the penetration? In the recent American Hunter there's an article on these.Supposedly while hunting turkeys they knocked off a mature male coyote at 50 yds using the 3" with 4 shot.I hunt coyotes a lot and I'm VERY skeptical of that claim. My usual load is 3" 4 buck for them.

Your right it is just lead.. Winchester is touting 10 % greater penetration at 50 and beyond do not know how they can make the claim.. With that being said a handloader on another board chrono'd it and it was over 1300FPS which will help..

Keep it to normal turkey killing ranges and it will work fantastic.

For what it's worth ... I misjudged the yardage on a bird this weekend. Figured he was 25 yards, turned out to be 43 solid paces and I'd have let him come on in but I had a pretty fidgety 11 year old with me. Dead as a doornail. Winchester DBL-X 20 gauge. I've used them for 22 years, haven't patterned them in my new shotgun but they get it done - once I do I'll post the results.

I shot #5 3 Inch LB for a pattern test. I got 200 in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards.
