Opening Day Double

Postby DUCKWHACKER » Sun Mar 23, 2008 8:55 am

3/15/08 dawned cool and clear. Dad and I were set up about 1 1/2 hrs before daybreak in my secret spot on a heavily hunted central Florida WMA. Early mornin' came and went with no action but I knew things can get good after 9:30am or so when the gobblers get lonely and look for new hens. So it was, just after 10:00am, a single gobble erupted from the swamp. I yelped back and saw what had to be a different bird threadin' his way to us already. Some clucks and purrs got him to sound off. Yes. Looks like it may work out. I tell Dad to get ready. Suddenly one red head turns into two. Thoughts of a double start to enter my mind. I coax the birds right into the dekes at a mere 18 yards. 1...2...3...BOOM,BOOM. Both are down doin' the snood slapped shuffle. My Osceola went 17 1/2lbs, 9" beard, 1 1/8"and 1 3/16" spurs. Dads was 15lbs, 8"beard and 1" spurs. Cool thing was, this was the third morning ever we had hunted this spot and the 5th and 6th Osceola to be bagged there. Not a bad spot to average 2 Osceolas per sittin'.

WAY TO GO!!!!! Man that is a honey hole if I`ve ever heard one. Looks like all your hard work and GREAT scouting is paying off in BIG ways. And a double on top of it. Man I wish I had been there two see the look on your face when you realized you might have the chance to pull it off.

Congratulations on a job well done

Thanks guys. It was pretty crazy pullin' it off two openers in a row. Yes I have pictures, from last season and this one. I'm not sure how to post em up here.
Now if I can do the same in Texas next month...
