16 Gauge Turkey gun?

Postby VA Wigeon » Sun Feb 22, 2009 8:53 pm

Does anybody out there use a 16 for turkey hunting? If so, what kind, range, ammo etc.

I use a 2-3/4" light 12 now but have a 11-48 16 gauge with a super tight choke that I am wanting to try.

hey buddy, check this out. this is the gun, I'm still looking for a heavier load that I dont have to buy a full box of 25 shells for. my choice would be 1 1/4 oz of #5 lead. but i'm confident with what i've got here, and in the location and the birds.

Thanks Blue, I remember that gun, what a sweetheart. I sort of thought about my 16 as a backup and shot a few patterning rounds through it with good results as I remember. I found an expensive box of Fed. magnum #6s that looked good. I like my Light 12 but the 11-48 is so much lighter to carry I want to try it as my primary turkey gun this year. It is deadly on tree rats.

That 16ga should be fine. I hunted with an Itaca 37 16ga a few years ago. Straight full choke barrel, good for 25yds all day. After that was stretching it, but I didn't try other shells and it didn't have a choke tube either. Those 11-48's are nice, have one in a .410, great bunny gun. Good luck.

With shells they have now ideas a 16 gauge is plenty to dust a longbeard. I wouldnt think that it would limit your range one bit provided you get the right choke and shells

I have seen turkeys shot with a 20 gauge. Only disadvantage you will have is how far out you can shoot compared to a 12 gauge.

My 20 would tend to disagree with that tape measured 40 yards 226 pellets in a 10 inch circle with Fed 7s and a SSX 550..

If you were serious about getting the most out of that gun without reloading I would go here http://nitrocompany.com/ammunition.htm and get the straight 7 loading of hevi shot..
