Toms missing most of their fans

Postby Super Dave 32 » Mon Apr 27, 2009 4:14 pm

Alright you veteran turkey hunters, help me with this one. I saw 4 toms and 2 hens in the field this morning. Two of the toms (both with nice sized spurs and beards) had almost no fan feathers. Each of them only had 3 - 4 in tact fan feathers total. Some were broken off about 1/4 way up and others seemed to be totally missing. I know that toms can break their feathers fighting but these guys were missing almost the entire fan. They looked like jack o lantern teeth. What in the world could have caused this?

Its pretty normal when there is alot of competion for hens, They are fighting and from the sounds of it they are going at it hard
I saw one this weekend the same way but he gave me the slip.

I agree, sounds like ALLOT of competition for hens. You must be covered up in gobblers. Should make for some exciting hunting. If you have a pretty boy decoy, it sounds like it would be a fine time to deploy it....Good luck huntin'.

Makes sense! Thanks! The two with missing feathers were hanging next to each other and were very close to the hens. There were two nice toms hanging back away from the boss toms. I guess they are waiting for the boss toms to kill each other so they can have a shot at the hens!

Two words....PRETTY BOY. You will be amazed at how very mature toms will run across a field to jump on the new guy.
