Post rut tactics?

Postby fowlhunter » Sat Nov 21, 2009 8:39 pm

Here in the great state of kansas the rut is pretty much in full swing. Rifle season starts a week from Wednesday and I was wandering what attractants would work. My dad and I have scout a couple good shooters for him and my sister and I was just looking for an edge. I know there is no real way to pattern deer when the get stupid chasing does. The one stand has 3 big ground scrapes underneath it, with some impressive tracks to match. I know the deer travel under and around our stands, so that part is down. Any advise would be great!

Ya, but my dad and sister just rifle hunt. We've been looking for them. I'm gonna get a doe tag. I've 3 kids and they all like it.

What would happen if you took buck urine and poured it in an existing ground scrape?

Personally I like to use mock scrape to help funnel them in to me. If you know there bedding area this is real easy. Second, rattling.

Using buck urine is a great tactic, it will piss him off to know end if he's the dominate buck around.

Even if you use their scrape? Or do you make your own?

You can do it all different ways. Either just leave his alone and make a new one which he'll think another buck is in the area and he'll be looking for him or doctor both up (yours and his) and he'll get pissed thinking someone's in his territory. You can put doe in heat scent in his which will keep him close thinking there's a doe around and you can put a couple drops on the way from the scrape to your stand to help funnel him in.
