Help with ruffed grouse

Postby Bill Herian » Wed Dec 16, 2009 12:01 am

Howdy all. I might head up to northern Wisconsin next week to do some late bowhunting. I figure after freezing my dice off for a few hours in the tree i'll be ready walk around. I hunt ruffed grouse all the time in Oct and Nov but Ive never hunted them in the snow. Does grouse behavoir change once there is 6+ inches of snow? Is it even worth going out? I really dont know what their winter behavior is and any help would be appreciated.

love hunting grouse but never really hunted them in the snow. from what i know about grouse, when the snow gets deeper, they head up the mountain when most other animals are heading down.

i know this is late for you now, unfortunately I didn't notice this until recently.
Late season is spotty in my experience, but a great time to go out. Since birds will fly into the snow at night and seek protection, they may be laying low in the AM. If they are foraging, it can be a bit easier to track them as well. In my experience, while the flushes may be few and far between, late season birds can offer the opportunity for multiple down if you're a fast shoot. Obviously this is both a blessing and a curse because if you get caught unaware you're SOL. Shots are often at a longer range with wary birds and little to no cover, so I usually go to a 6 in a 3 inch if i can (shooting 20 ga).
Worthless info in the middle of March, but hey, maybe next season?
