Turkey? Overrated as far as I'm concerned! LOL! I had my chances Pat, but those toms were sneaking in on me without a sound, and I guess these old eyes need a second pair along to look the opposite direction then I am. I got caught with my pants down three times! I really enjoy hunting those late-season birds, because they are on hen patrol, but they sure are leary! Next year I'm only applying for the first season. I need to spoil myself with the winter flock....more eyes to bust you, but more birds to shoot as well! Plenty of jakes, and a few chances to shoot a few bearded hens, but I didn't have the stomach to pull the trigger and wipe out a nest full of eggs. Tempting? Yes indeed. One hen had a beard 10 inches long and about the thickness of a broom handle. If I had been in a blind, I would have been able to shoot three toms. I spent one entire season hunting a bird with a paintbrush for a beard, and some Jim-dandy spurs. He's one of those birds who just knew you were there, and will most likely die of old age. I don't ordinarily give a crap about those type of birds, and will take a two-year old any day of the week, but I had to prove to myself that he was a bird that would not elude me. I had a chance at him at the outer reaches of my pattern, but let him walk. One more evening and one more full day to put two ounces of lead in his head.......or else he lives to strut another day....our season officially ends Sunday!
And after six full weeks of sleep deprivation and bones that hurt from sitting in the most uncomfortable positions, I'm ready for a day off. I called in four birds for friends, but as you already know, we're only (basically)allowed one bird per hunter per season....with the exception of the left over, over the counter remaining tags.
I wonder what I'll do to keep myself busy?
OH YA! F I S H I N G!!!!!!!!!!!
