6 shooter for woman

Postby PSUbuzz » Fri Oct 22, 2010 1:35 pm

I'm seeing a girl who is into country western stuff. She shoots archery competitively, loves to ride horses, and likes shooting guns at targets. She isn't into shooting as far as hunting goes, and isn't worried about self defense, but would like a "cowgirl" gun to do some target shooting with. She has been asking about .22s and 45s. I think a 22 wouldn't be enough excitement for as into shooting as she is but a 45 would have too much kick for her small frame. I was thinking a 357 mag or 38. Can I get your opinions on what to get her as far as a model and what kind of calibers should she be looking at? She wants to go to a big gun store on sunday on a date (her idea) and check out some handguns so I'm trying to get some input from the duck huntin boys and girls on what to be lookin for.
Thanks! Buzz

with the right grips I don't see a 38 being a problem at all, especially if it is a 6" barrel.

Colt 45 cowboy loads are not that bad, using Trail Boss light loads.

200gr LFN 706fps 3.01 ft lb recoil 855 fps 4.39 ft lbs of recoil in a 2.8 pound gun.

My 158 +P FBI load in my 357 has 3.15 ft lbs of recoil.

Just make sure the gun has enough weight to help out on the recoil and maybe try out a load from some ones gun, if possible.

Take a look at the .32's (.32 mag, .32 long, etc.). A good middle ground.
