baja mexico phesant hunting and my dog tia's first hunt

Headed down to Mexico for the pheasant opener this last weekend with my old man, Winda my 10 year old lab and Tia for her first hunt ever. Up till now it had all been fun and games with pigeons and lots of wings. It was time for TIa to earn her keep and wow i am still amazed at what she did.

Trial by fire! the first 3 fields were cotton and choked full of weeds. Winda and Tia got after it with roosters keeping everyone interested and active. Tia's demeanor changed from her play mode to work mode and she was on it. Quartering nice and watching each bird as it got up she was learning fast. She let Winda and Coco pick up the first few birds but after that the young gun after it and started to bring them back.

As much as i like hunting with a big group its way more fun to play small ball and hunt the hedge rows and little weed pockets. This is where we did some damage to the pheasant population. With one 100 x 30 yard strip of Milo kicking out over 15 birds. At the end of that strip my old man shot a double. Both dogs ripped out after wounded pheasants. Tia got the long one letting Winda take the short. Was a great sight to see my two girls with birds in there mouth trotting back.

We finished off the afternoon with a dove shoot. The doves are thick like flys in the cut wheat fields and easy limits were on tap.

Few photos from the trip but not much in the way of action shots. Was just to busy keeping both dogs in line and killing birds. All the birds in Baja Mexico are 100% wild. They crossed over in the 1950s when California was planting birds. The weather was brutal with temps in the 70s :)

Just saw this post. (just getting into field hunting now that I have a lab). What kind of permits do you need to hunt down in Baja and how was it crossing the boarder with guns? How far south were you? I was down there this summer for almost two weeks for a Masters Program in biology and enivromental education. We were in the high desert for part of trip and then on the Sea of Cortez in Agua de Las Flores. I'm just interested because I have a buddy who is stationed in San Diego now who would love to get back into hunting.
