I use a 17 HMR, and it is deadly. Most folks I know use a .223, but the .17 is a lot cheaper to shoot and it is just a killing machine out to 200yds.

I shoot a .223 Ruger. My buddies have .17s, 22-250s, and .223s and they all seem to get the job done....

Do you have a .243 for deer hunting? That'll work just fine with the right bullet, or any bullet if you're not worried about ruining the pelt. If you're not selling the pelt anything will work for them.

a 223 probably has the most ammo available relatively cheap and an H&R would be the cheapest new rifle but you might find a good deal on a used rifle. Savage makes very good rifles for the money.

.223 / .243 / .22-250 = all excellent rounds

So is .222 and all the other fast variants & wild cat rounds in that range - I even used my 5.45x39 AK to drop a dog before with excellent results.

Then again, if you can call them in close enough (50-75 yards) a 3in / 3.5 in "T" shot is $$ MONEY $$ For years, my favorite was #4 buckshot (copper plated lead - 54 pellet 3 inchers) yet I have had "T" shot in 3in. persuasion break skin / penetrate out to 75+ yards. So a shot gun works too... a really fun set up is one guy with a center fire and 2nd guy with a scatter gun. Lots of guys do that, so I am sure I ain't telling you anything you dont know.

I LOVE my Savage model 12BVSS; they make several variants and I couldn't say enough about the accuracy and quality. I hunted the hell out of coyotes, prairie dogs, foxes - etc. with this .223 bolt in New Mexico / Colorado and always enjoyed shooting it, the .223 in 55grain VMAX always delivered deadly results with mentionable accuracy.

Ive got a .17 HMR. Its the Remington 597. It will punch sub 1 inch groups at 100 yards and i use the CCI TNT Hollow Tips. Very very lethal. Ive killed pretty much anything you can think of with this gun.

Agreed - for 100yards / less, with proper shot placement many coyotes have died at the working end of a .22LR, .22MAG and the 17's...

But there is no greater satisfaction than seeing a coyote crumple up + bloody snow !~

My number one all time rifle is a Steven Model 200 in .22-250 Its light, cheap to buy ,and accurate as all get out. Additionally, the trigger was adjustable with an allen wrench right out of the box.

I also have shot some with variouis AR15's in .223 I have an R15 right now, its a nice gun. I highly reccomend the Rock River Coyote Carbine, its a real nice gun.

I have a .243 Savage that shows great promise as a calling rifle, I have not taken it out much this year but its in my plans.

I have an older Ruger 6MM Remington that has killed many prairie dogs, but the gun is too heavy to carry in the field. I think 6MM is a great coyote round if you need to make those long shots out west.

I am thinking about a .17 HMR as a fox/cat gun

Ok, so I will be the first one on the .30 cal bandwagon. I shoot a remington model seven in a .308win with a 125 grain Speer TNT Varmit round. In fact shot my first one with that round last weekend and it really did a number on him.

So does a 7mm Mag! One had the unfortunate experience of meeting me during deer season.

It all depends where you live. Here in CA the prime time is from December to about March/April as there is not a lot of food for them. Once the does start dropping their fawns in May then it gets tougher because food for them is easy.

As far as time, last weekend I slept in till about 7, got up had a cup of coffee and was setup by 9:30 and had my first one by 9:32. I have also read a lot where guys have more luck hunting mid day then at first light.

22 Hornet is a great round also. Ammo can be hard to come by though.

as far as the 22-250 goes are there any other uses for that caliber? im looking into getting into hunting coyotes as well but dont know if i should just get a cheap rifle in that caliber or spend the money and get something nicer. if this caliber is common for use against other type of game i would be inclined to spend a little more

Your best bet there would be a .243

The .22-250 is a varmint round, pure and simple. Its fast, flat, and deadly at long range.

I cold say the same thing about the .243

One thing over looked in this discussion is the .22 mag. It is deadly on all varmints under 100 yards...and plenty accurate. I intend to get a bobcat with mine this winter. Should be more fur friendly than the .223

If you don't own a rifle yet, get a .243. It's more versatile. You can use that for deer too.
