Texas Hogs

Postby jimmyash » Wed Oct 12, 2011 9:59 am

My buddy and I are planning on going down to texas to take out a few depredation hogs. Having no experience hunting hogs i thought i would ask a few questions here. Neither of us have high powered rifles, though we both have 12 ga shotguns. Would slugs do the job or would you recommend saving up for a rifle? I would only want to spend max 400 on the rifle itself, scopes, rings etc can be more. We would be primarily stalking them. Also, is a handgun a necessity for means of protection? Any other information you think we should know would be greatly appreciated!

I was looking on line the other day, there are several outdiiters/ranches that off hog hunts for 100-200 dollars a day for a two day hunt! While yea, ya can use a shot gun, I would suggest a rifle, heck you can eveb get a single shot like the H&R Handi in several calibers for under 300!

12 ga will be fine if you are sneak hunting and there is plenty of cover, if not you will want a rifle. Hogs are smarter and faster than you think they are. What would you need protection from that you need to carry a pistol?

The 12 ga. will kill them just fine. The question is whether or not it will have the range you need. Some of the country out there makes for some long shots. Check on the territory and type of hunting and you will be able to find out if the shotgun will work or if you need something longer range.
