Postby Fireonthe5string » Thu Oct 20, 2011 5:02 am

Hey fellas im new around here ive been readin these forums for 2 years and finally joined...but to the point I'm from the Ironton area but currently in the stationed in oklahoma ...im retruning home from my deployment right at duck season and il be headed to ohio for a couple weeks...i havnt duck hunted a whole lot up there mostly deer/turkey and when i did it wasnt very good but id like to find a decent spot so me and my dad can go out and have some quality time spent..he duck hunted die hard years ago but those spots are gone now..another thing is i dont wanna pull a boat 1400 miles across the country and have to listen to the wife about it... so i prefer somewhere i can get by with just waders so uless its one of the creeks the river is pretty much out of the question.. i would definately appreciate any help thanks guys

thanks alan...no i dont have a dog yet but i will be getting a pup from a reputable gundog breeder this spring, i have a small child so i gotta wait til shes a little bigger....but we have quite a few creeks running into the river....symmes creek, buffalo creek, stroms creek, lawrence creek, and jeannette's creek that i can think of....know anything about those? the past 4 years ive had great seasons hunting SW oklahoma, also outstanding hunts with my brother inlaw near the gulf coast of texas...whats the likely hood of seeing species besides mallard and woodies in southern ohio...dont get me wrong i love cuttin green heads....but im used to those, pintail, gadwall, teal, spoonies, widgeon and the occasional red head or ringneck...didnt start duck hunting hardcore until i hit the central flyway in 07...just kinda needing an idea of what decoys to bring

you could jump shoot those creeks ,I know thats not typical duck hunting style ,,or pick out the biggest hole and wait ,very few 2 or 3 decoys needed.OR do a float down them if deep enough,, Farmers still give permission it's amazing a friend just got permition to access the river from probably the biggest farm in the co. Another just last week got permission to hunt a bean field with a 2 acre swamp in the middle .I was sure all the good spots were tied up in leases. Get out and ask ,have a good season.

Your going to have to get there and look around. Things change by the day.

i imagine you are talking about returning home around the early split correct which is more than halfway over at this point? I dont know ironton that well for hunting areas. As for the ducks, you more than likely will see only woodies with resident greenheads here and there. If you will be hunting the late split in Dec/Jan, you could get into a mess of different species.
