I use a plastic baggy for my phone (and my hunting license / stamps). The touch screen on iPhones and Android phones should work through the bag. Not completely waterproof, but should save it from a quick dunk.

i do what lablover says. always tell someone where im going, usually send a text out when i get to the location, and some updates, and when im leaving out. especially when im in anew area or different state with no buddies or relatives for a long ways i try give great detail so if something happened and they didnt hear from me or i told them i was in trouble and they could have some general idea of telling people where to look.
