Do most people have a problem with Shovelers having Rice Brest? We started shooting one every once in a while down hear and it seems about 30% of them have it. Are we just unlucky? Is rice Brest safe to eat?
(To be fair we have a VERY small test sample, but if it is a problem we would rather go back to not shooting them)
i have shot 2 spoonies in 4 years here. not much help to you. but, i would not eat them as rice breast is a parasite. they say it is safe, i say no thanks.
Is it a problem in general hear then? This is the first time we have ever even come across rice breast, and is it just a coincidence that it has been the Shovelers? could it be it is just where we are hunting the birds have it?
It has set off a red flag to get so many that have it so close together considering it is the first season we have seen it at all.
i got a mallard drake with rice breast earlier in the season. first time i've ever seen it, didn't know what the hell it was till this post came along...
ive shot close to 20 or 30 this year with it and last year only 10, idk what the deal is and id wondeered if it was in other species apparently so.
For the record though, we have never left any type of bird in the field, ever. and if you where to throw infected birds in the trash in ut every seagull in the state would get this rice breast. it is a lose lose for sure
lose lose for sure, and i never meant to imply anything of the sort. it'd be interesting to see some/any stats on the prevalence of this now vs 5/10/20 years ago.
