Fishing Trip - Need suggestions...

Postby bhayes1 » Mon Feb 20, 2012 9:35 am

Hello,

I am in the works of planning a fishing trip for my Dad and I this summer. We would like to spend a couple days fishing for kings and a day fishing for halibut. We are not looking for a guide who pampers thier guest. We just want to get out and fish hard for a few days. If any of you could suggest a guide, area of Alaska, time of year to go that would be great!

Right now I am looking at Jimmie Jacks Lodge out of Kenai....

I know if I want good halibut fishing I need to head SE, but his rates seem reasonable.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You do not want to go to SE for halibut fishing. You can catch large fish but the largest you can now bring into the boat is one 37 inch fish. That will be the most expensive fish you have ever bought outside of a traditional Tokyo sushi bar serving blue fin tuna.

Adam is a good duck hunter as well as a Kenai fishing guide. If he can't set you up on his boat, he will point you towards someone that can work with your travel plans. Adam can also point you towards some Cook Inlet halibut charters if not take you himself.

Just for future info, the 37 in. rule for guided halibut in SE was changed for the 2012 season. I believe it's one a day, no size limit now.

Saltwater Safari's out of seward is a good one for halibut/lingcod/salmon, plan your trip after july 1 if you want to catch lingcod. Planning a trip strictly for halibut isn't worth it these days.
