Its been a long time..... wanna see my new decoys???

Postby mallard_ded » Mon Apr 02, 2012 6:25 pm

It has been a long time since I posted last.....even though I watch the forum fairly regularly......
A long time ago I was asking how to pull Goldeneye's in that just kept flying up and down the river not giving my huge spread of divers..... around 6 dozen GHG Goldeneye's.... one look at all....
a lot has changed.... and due to some of the help I received here... I improved my success.... and have taken steps to further my success by upgrading to some new decoys...
A huge thanks goes out to Matt Malyuk for helping bring this all to reality for me....

A few pics of the Hens..... I had a dozen decoys total painted ..... 8 Drakes and 4 Hens. They are NOT finished yet.... they still have a little over a week of finish painting and drying and adding their Keels.... all the birds have been texturized for a more durable hunting decoy opposed to just straight acrylic or enamel paint. That should make them last a little longer

Thanks dude...... I have been wanting some of these ever since I used to guide for a waterfowl lodge and the head guide hunted over 18 custom painted mallards.....he put out a couple hundred standard Flambeau decoys around the hole...but the shooting took place directly over the 18 E. Allens. I said to myself.....when I grow up.... I want to own some of those. I chose Common Goldeneye's because divers are my favorite birds to hunt. They still need their flat clear coat and keels attached... and around a week to fully dry.... but this is one investment I look forward to enjoying for a lifetime. Now i need to find out what type bag.....and how to string/weight them up so as not to damage them throwing them out and taking them in. They won't see any use untill the cold icy Mississippi River brings the Goldeneye's through here.... so I want to be plenty ready to float them.

Once again.... THANK YOU Matt Malyuk for bringing this all to reality!!!!

I would definitely single slot bag them and maybe individual bags in that. I think Diane's is the name of the place everyone buys single deek bags in bulk from.
Really curious on cost details, if you could PM me.
Those are some sweet lookin' blocks there.

Its no secret..... they are costly.... but I plan to hunt Goldeneye's when they arrive with the ice here....
They will run me right at $1000.00 for the 12 birds. To most that would be a stupid move........ however.... The 18 Mallards that were custom painted I use to hunt over with the Head Guide at an Orvis Endorsed lodge some 10 years ago.... had a price tag of around $250.00 a bird. So at a little less than $100.00 a bird for a truly custom painted decoy... I feel like my dream of owning some isn't all that bad.
I normally hunt over 400-500 plastic diver decoys.....a lifetime accumulation of G&H, GHG, and anything that will hold black and white paint..... so these are a decoy that I want to target Goldeneye's when they are here...

I was looking at Diane's decoy bags...... does anyone own any of these that could give me an idea on them? This bag looked pretty cool...with the zipper and all...but I wasn't sure about durability..

Mallard you ever considered carving your own?
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,
Trash it, change it, mail - upgrade it,
Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it,
Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,
Write it, cut it, paste it, save it,
Load it, check it, quick - rewrite it,
Plug it, play it, burn it

I have Avery bags, like them, not the greatest quality but keeps everything organized and protected. Nice for separating species also

Carving my own??? No way.... way too skill challenging for me..... however I am going to give a try at painting my own. E. Allens come primed, heads unattached, no keels..... ready for someone to bring them to life... I had a lot of art classes in high school.....but thats been 20+ years ago. I am going to give it a try..... how cool would it be to hunt divers over a spread of birds YOU painted!!!!
As far as the bags...... I have some Rig 'Em Right bags now.... not for this situation.. but the DP3 XL has only 2 slots... that split the bag into two compartments.. like this:
Image
As you can see... there is no way I am going to just throw these babies into a bag without individual slots!!

BTW.... that is one helluva boat/blind there my friend......

you should try it anyway. My son and I have carved a few, saying they are rough is an understatement but we have killed plenty of birds with them and it is cool to hint over your own stuff. Here is a Buffy he carved for me as a Xmas present a few years back, rough but priceless

Your right dude..... that would be cool.... and to have your son carve you one for Christmas.... that would be priceless!!! For now I think I am going to stick with just painting them..... the materials needed to carve them are not easily available here in the midwest..... I think.... I never really looked into it.

BTW..... that drake buffy is cool is his own way... I would be one proud S.O.B. if I could trick some birds with it......

That's awesome Dude!!!!! I wouldn't go diver huntin without him..... he would be my good luck charm...
just curious.....has he brought you any luck?? Has any birds tried to land with him??

Another tidbit about my decoys.... the Goldeneye's are from a carving by Hank Garvey from Plum Island, Massachusetts. Hank has numerous awards and best of shows to his credit along with winning 2nd best of show in the Ward World Shooting Rig Competition in 1998 with his 3 White Winged Scoters.
