22/250 range time today

Postby Duplex lover » Wed Apr 04, 2012 2:03 pm

The TC- 22/250 has been in the shop for a recall on the safety. I got it back and put in some range time with it today.First I had to get here back "IN", not to difficult. I took the scope off at the mounts to return it so, slapped it back on and was only one click off up and two clicks over to the right and she was back. I'm using a 52 gr Match king and Varget, very accurate and around 3800 fps. I also made my two stick, sticks in to a three stick, sticks and tested them out. I think the combo will but coyotes and prairie dogs in to never never land. :hi:

Then I wanted to use the 22/250 for antelope this year ( we already had that conversation here) so I had 5 loads of Nosler 60 gr partition and "hunter" powder and 5 loads of the 60's and Varget powder. Last year I used a 45gr Barnes going around 4200 fps, shot great just not enough to kill well.AS normal the Varget preformed the best. The hunter was very consistent but like 1 1/2 " groups, all five. The Varget was best on the lower end of the test around 3400 fps thats normal too. I was shooting off my homemade bench with bags,no lead sled today. The temp was 55* and a slite wind around 10 mph in my face but it was switching around a lot SSW S SSE.
The groups probably would be a little better with the sled but it tells me what I need to know.
I love the smell of burnt powder, I "Tested & shot" 50 shells. LOVE IT. Now back to power raking dang.

Looks like the gun can hold its own for those 200 yards shots.
With all the different bullet weights in the 50-55grs area , it took me years to test most of them and see what my rifle liked the best. Now you have copper, copper with platic tips and even no lead bullets.
Just a real bummer when you find a good one and the company discontinues it !!

The 60gr Nosler was not too accurate in my rifle but the 70gr Speer and 55gr Bear Claw grouped under 2" at 200 yards
all day long on many visits to the range. The Nosler took a Nevada 3x4 mule deer ,so it should be plenty for a "Lope" if
at 200 yards with a lung/heart ,shot.

Good shooting.

Nice Duplex! That looks like a shooter. I also like my .22-250 I use the same load, MK and varget. I am getting ready to start using some 40-45 grn bullets just to see how it does.

Just remember fast bullets and large amounts of powder , burn out barrels quicker.............
When the throat is burnt out and rifling reduced ,you will notice accuracy going down hill.

4,000 fps is not always a good thing...........some of my best target loads are at 3200fps............
but barrels are a lot cheaper now adays, if you do want to go warp speeds.

I have a 6mm Ruger that is very accurate...but only if it is 2 grains below maximum. I have tested and played with that gun for years. The fact is, in that particular rifle likes to be 2 grns under max.

I like speed, but never at the cost of consistent accuracy.

Duplex lover,

is your TC a encore pro hunter? I had one in 50cal but the accuracy was Poor at best so I sold it. I am now looking at getting another Pro Hunter in 243 for varmint hunting but am curious about the accuracy in the rifles due to the Muzzle loader issues I had. I want the encore due to the ability to eventually pick up a 223 barrel and a 12ga rifled barrel for it.
