Proposed Central Flyway regs

Postby PTROOFER FTFOWLER » Wed Aug 08, 2012 8:25 pm

Here is a link from the FWP. They are accepting comments on a proposed split for the Central Flyway. I know some of the boys up north might not like it because of freezing up, but every year here when I go out to clean up my spots a week or two after the season the birds are thicker then I've seen them all year. Vote yay or nay, up to you, but send in your comment. Pretty cool that they are letting us chime in.

I assume other people then myself check this board during the summer?

Personally I would like to see it state wide. I would rather shoot fat late season greenheads than all the brown early season.

I commented. In addition I said it should be split in both the central AND the pacific flyways. 13 years outa the last 15 the late season hunting has far surpassed anything in Oct. Opening day is always fun to knock the edge off but then its hot, bugs and brown ducks. Much rather have another 10 days or 2 weeks in Jan. Im 100% for a split or later opening date.

I see we get to shoot an additional goose this year in the Central. Oh joy! LOL

I would also like to see the split season in both flyways. Unless the winter is especially tough we hold birds year round and get a pretty good buildup in January. We had a split season a while back and it worked out OK.

I think it's good that FWP are giving us options and taking comments. That said, I don't think I want a split. I have great hunts in October and enjoy the variety of ducks we have around.

I would love to shoot 5 geese/day but I think it would only increase the numbers of outfitters and result in more land being leased up.

This is very important. Thanks for posting this up PT.

Regardless of your position, make sure you give them good informed comments. This represents a potential real shift in their thinking. For years, many of us have been asking for something like this option #2. Glad they are at least listening. We shall see what happens.
Rest in Peace, Ryder. Boy, you went before your time, in the start of your prime. You were loyal and are missed.

I have to admit...I voted for sticking with Option 1. I love combining waterfowl, upland and big game outings in October. Plus, my experience has been that the species diversity is highest in late October in the part of the Central I hunt. With Option 2 I'd be trading a prime portion of pothole time in October for permission to hunt hockey rinks in January.

Listening to the Commission meeting this morning, it sounds like they will recommend that Option 1 remain in place for ducks in the Central. However, the goose season will have a small split to extend the season a bit. Even the Commission sounded a little confused about the final goose season dates so I'll refrain from posting what was said and recommend that we wait until it's in writing.

Although it is dated last Friday, FWP didn't post this until this morning:

The regulation brochure has been finalized as well:

WOW, I think you Central guys missed out on a real chance
to kill some birds. I don't even know if I'll have my gear out
by the 31st. Hunting young birds in the 70's and bugs sounds
like an easy trade for fat greenheads in Jan. That's just me,
and I don't hunt over there so.....Jimmy crack corn ;)

That's the thing. It is an easy trade for anyone hunting the Yellowstone or Bighorn areas. However, from Harlowton north to Canada and east to NoDak you would miss out on a good chunk of prime time. Most of that water is frozen by Thanksgiving let alone January. Ideally there should be northern and southern zone seasons in the MT portion of the Central.

Top, I think the guys south are the ones missing out, where i hunt, ive seen it froze solid first week of November, and the birds are gone. My comment to the fish and game was split central into a north and south zone, south getting the split. 3 years ago mid october everything other than river and big water froze briefly, but opened up again a week later.Year before that 2nd weekend of october we hunted in a blizzard. My best hunting last year was last week of november 1st week of december. My best North dakota hunting, where I live was November 12-20. But i'm talking Greenheads..

Great!!! Just what Idaho needs a bunch of out of staters.......just kidding you phutch30. Im not too far South of you and your welcome in the blind anytime. Since you are going to kill our late season greenheads I think I will start the year early and hunt Montana and kill some of your brown ducks. Fair trade.

Its alot cheaper for you to hunt MT than for me than me in ID. LOL by the time I get my season hunting and fishing license(240), salmon (30) tag deer tag(300) and lube up to pay out to put in for a moose tag (2050), I figure ID owns me a couple ducks. LOL
PS I wont be shooting your ducks I'll be over on the snake better 1/2 way across the state.
Come onver for a brown duck fest befor you open up
