I have 11 birds so far this year, haven't lost one. My advise is let em work and get in close, if you don't take the 50 yard + shot, you will see where they are at. Not to mention it makes the shooting easier (I am just under 75% this year). As for the smart weed, I remember the last few years of high water during the summer and no cover during duck season, so as much as I would hate to say it, I agree. You just have to find your path through the stuff and go thru it. I guess a duck hunter (self included) is rarely completely satisfied, it is always not enough planted, not enough water, too much water, too much smart weed, no birds, but never heard too many birds...Either way, the season is just started now that we won't be shooting only locals. Let em work boys and you wont lose them.

If you want to know what smart weed is, go to the Fishhook ramp, look out .... all the brown, smartweed. It is so thick in areas that you can be wading and not be able to push forward. So completely understandable that someone could lose a bird.

ive probably hunted in it just didnnt know thats what it was. it would be nice of you local fellows to get out there and stomp a path thru it maybe tie some reflective tape on it, so an old fat man and his grandson can find his way thru it.

Your timing is good. With the help others have offered you should see birds. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't in DEC when the central zone was closed. I couldn't remember the dates you mentioned.

dont know if the walk ins will ever change this year. might kill em in bad weather. i'm thinkin our best bet may be when it freezes in the those shallow areas. birds landing out in the middle is gettn old. we'll see on friday. i'm gonna be on the big water.

I would agree. However still have to have birds stay close vs. leaving before shooting time...

Hunted fishhook today and should have had 4. Didnt call the shot because I like to get them as close as possible and it cost us. Saw more birds today than last week. Hopefully with this cold coming we will get a puch of some new ducks or make the ones that are there finish a little better.

Went by McGee yesterday around 10am and talked with a guy there...said Sat it was pretty slow, maybe one duck killed that he saw. As usual, pretty competitive to get a blind on weekends. I have been hunting Lake Shelbyville all season, and exept for opening day, have been watching them "fly by". Gonna hit it hard this week (retired early) and see if luck changes.

How'd you boys do down there this weekend?

We were a little slow this week, but birds were shot.

Hunted McGee this morning and "heard" many many ducks before light. Apparently they all left but a few stragglers before shooting time. Ugh! Also, pretty tough going as ice was forming. Water is waist deep in many places...watch out!

We hunted fishhook this morning. There were birds flying early but after about 8 they shut down. No wind sucked and we had to break ice. Should have killed 3 but we were shooting very poorly. Ended up with a mallard x blue wing.
