I would call this a successful morning. The boy got his first goose. We weren't even planning for goose. Went out to a spot that I knew was hot for teal and some mallards. We set up before first light, threw out some deeks and got down in the weeds. As the sun was coming up, several teal flew over. The boy hadn't loaded yet, so a missed opportunity. A couple more teal flew through as he was getting loaded. By that point, some geese were getting up. Turned out, they were just a field away. We had a couple of flocks fly over real low. He picked a bird and stuck with it. One shot dropped the goose hard in the water right out front. The dog made a beautiful retrieve and put a huge smile on my face as well as my son.

Here is the boy in the marsh.

Here is the boy with the dog and canoe back where we launched.

Did a little scouting after. Found out where all the geese and mallards were heading to in the morning. Now we know where we plan to be next saturday. Hopefully they will plan to do the same.

Is it goose season in your zone? Just wondering. Nice bird for him. Congrats.

Geese are permitted as it was a Youth Waterfowl event in my zone. Bag limits of the regular season apply.
