Just a tidbit of info here: unless you are referring to hunting in an area that is tough and hard to get through, meaning the going is rough, your reference should be to a ruffed grouse.

I've heard 2 drumming, and mistook Hen Pheasant I flushed for one. But other than that I've had very poor action.
Otherwise I've had much better luck with Pheasant.

Where abouts are you that you're having such luck?

I'm from Upstate NY.

The grouse hunting in the areas of north Jersey I hunted when younger is terrible now. I can walk all day and not put up a single bird. A buddy of mine who is a biologist said it was due to forest succession resulting in poorer habitat but I don't buy it. The woods I hunted haven't changed all that much (I have a forestry degree myself and would have noticed the change) and were fairly mature in the days when I put up a half dozen birds a day. Others have blamed it on competition from expanding turkey populations. I guess that's possible, since wild turkey were virtually non-existent here when I was young and are common now. In any case, I simply don't hunt grouse anymore. I was never in it for a body count, but rather to enjoy a pleasant day in the woods, but I do need to see at least one bird now and then to justify carrying the gun.
