DIY Louisiana?

Postby TheWanderer » Mon Dec 10, 2012 10:27 pm

Just looking for some insight on realistic this is.

Never been south on a duck hunt and want to make the trip in January 2014.

I plan on calling down to the Game and Fish Department but thought may folks had some opinions on how realistically good a DIY Louisiana duck hunt can be if I have a week to do it in.

I see all that coastline on the map but I don't yet know is that all off limits and what the property rules are like.

Every state is so different but I do know that leasing is big in the south.

My goal is to get in some AM hunts and I know if I have some family go they'll want to fish for redfish in the afternoon.

Thanks for any insight on how good this trip could be.

Thanks for a start.

Does Pass a Loutre get much pressure? Certainly looks like its out of the way.

I think I can set up well for a hunt down in LA. I have a flat bottom 18 foot crestliner with a 50 outboard. Guess I can't get too deep without a surface drive, but do I really need one?

Also don't know if this is a dumb question. Is a lab safe retrieving in places like this? Don't want her to turn into an alligator meal.

If anyone is ever interested I can trade information on cast and blast in NJ for the same in LA. A good trip hunting NJ coastal divers and black ducks and fishing for striped bass when they make their fall migration can be had in late November/early December. I'm hoping to get out for scoters later this week but the bay has to be nice and calm for my boat.

If anyone knows anything and more than just if the hunting/fishing is good about the Biloxi Marsh (or if Pass a Loutre is a good place to go) please let me know. Good places to eat and stay are very useful. Picking the wrong place to stay after a long drive can sour a trip real quick. Also never fished for redfish or speckled trout before and while I'm reading up suggestions on rigs/baits/lures are very much appreciated.
