What are the benefits or drawbacks to having a lighter or heavier recoil spring? Where can gun damage occur with an improper spring? Thanks!

a lighter spring will increase cycle reliability with light(skeet loads).a stiffer spring heavy loads.different guns this will very but thats the principle.

if you install a lighter spring, do not shoot magnum loads as you can damage the rear of the receiver. I have seen guns with weak springs with the rear of the bolt peened over and the inside rear of the receiver broken out. The heavier springs just help to ensure a good solid closing of the bolt and I use them in some of my guns that only see a lot of magnum loads, They will still cycle heavy trap loads too but not 1oz loads in my experience.
