If I was going after LARGE brown bears in Alaska or to the Dark Continent the 338 would fill the bill. But for the majority of North American game it is a bit overkill...not to mention expensive and painful to shoot recreational when zeroing scopes or testing loads. I used to love fast magnums (7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, etc.) but after a day at the range with a heavy hitter I have come to appreciate the efficacy, accuracy and comfort of a 308 or 270.
