What to Plant

Postby colebyrob » Sat Jan 26, 2013 7:29 am

I have a beaver pond and i am going to install a Clemson leveler in it. I was wondering what is the easiest thing to grow. I will not be able to get any big equipment in this place but will have a four wheeler and a atv disk.i was thinking about planting rice but have heard it was hard to grow. What are some of your suggestions on what to plant. ( the area is open so it will have plenty of sunlight)

millet is cheap and easy to establish; it also has a short growing period so water levels can be left high until late june early july for the spring broods.

Jap millet is the easiest to grow. Just broadcast and it'll come up. Rice is a little tougher to grow, but if you do, I would suggest raising the water level to just below the top of the stalks after the rice gets about 6 inches tall. That will keep down the weeds in the "impoundment". That said, if you can plant and grow corn in there, do it. Put about 36" between rows which will allow for the ducks to land amongst the corn. If you have ringnecks in the area, you may want to leave an open spot so they can also have a landing spot.
