Muskrat trapping...Anyone here big into it?

Postby Tr1ggerHappy » Sun Jan 27, 2013 6:35 pm

I have been looking to purchase some land this year and it is loaded with ducks and another thing muskrats. I see a ton of guys at the ramp pulling out with tons of them and it looks like they have to be doing it for a little extra cash i would believe? If anyone knows do they sell the pelts? How good is the meat do they eat them? Just trying to see if it might be worth getting into?
Any information would be awesome.
Thanks

they do sell the pelts, they get about $11 each, that is skinned, fleshhed and streched. it is a lot of work but can be verry fun. some people that set enough traps and go at it full time do make some money but most do it becouse they enjoy it, and hope to break even after you take into account supplies and fule. even the ones making money if you added up time spent probally wouldnt equal minimum wage, but again it can be very fun. as for the meat i herd it can be eaten but most people discard or use for bait trapping other animals

fur auctions or a local fur buyer if you can find one. there is usually 2 auctions in nj each year. 1 at the space farm in sussex nj, and one is in robinsville area i believe. sometimes if your not into all the work you can find another trapper to buy them for a couple of dollars, just freeze them whole or skin them and bag the skins and sell to another trapper that way.

you also have to take the nj trappers course, if interested keep an eye out for the courses on fish and game website, as they only have a couple in the whole state each year and they fill up really fast!!!!!!!

The trapper course is the three day course correct? I want to do it and I attended a few talks and demonstrations about skinning muskrats but Its not really possible to take three days off from work.

tr1ggerhappy if you buy the property and get your license and want someone to point you in the right dirrection on your first sets, icould show you the ropes. would have to go at low tide and look for holes and runs.
