Excellent duck hunting guide in Jacksonville, FL

Postby grubbab » Tue Feb 05, 2013 6:07 pm

I am not really a duck hunter, but my 12 year old was begging me to take him out for the youth hunt weekend. I found online jaxwildlife. I booked a charter with Jason. We were thrilled with the hunt. We hunted out of Guana preserve. The guide provided everything we needed, including a hot bacon and eggs breakfast cooked over a camp stove in the boat. He put us on a virtually unlimited number of ducks. My son shot 3 nice ducks. The price was reasonable, and he was very knowledgeable and spent a lot of time coaching the boy on shooting techniques, etc. I would recommend this company to anyone of any skill level.

You had a good time with your boy , it doesn't matter where you guys went , a dad that take his son to the outdoors is good for this sport

That is good to hear you took your son out and he got on some birds. Always great to hear about more youth getting involved in the sport.

However....

Sad thing is that you had to pay for a guide for Guana. Seriously? Someone is actually running a guide service in Jax and taking people to Guana? Not that i'm putting down this guys' guide service, but might i suggest getting around and making some new waterfowl friends. Heck if i was down there i would have taken you out no charge. We always cook breakfast in my boat, (just not in the hybrids), and i normally take a few new people out each season. I know of at least 3 or 4 guys down there that would have done the same thing.

Once again, glad to hear your son got on some birds! Hope he continues to be involved in waterfowling.

I understand, but i still can't believe there is a guy running a guide service using Guana. :lol3:

As for VA, it has it's days. The duck hunting is far worse here than down in FL. Traffic sucks and the weather is crap. Can't wait to get orders back to FL or retire and head back down there. As for the chessie, that is astrobud311, and yes he still has the chessie.

No kidding. Good job to the dad for getting his son into hunting, but what a joke about Guana. Just so everyone knows, this fall I will be starting up my own guide service, and will be running hunts out of Guana, PCS, the STA's and all Leon County lakes. $300/hunter-Reserve your spots now, as they should fill up fast.

Guy on cl every year advertises hunts on Seminole. Hey, if you get customers and they come back, who am I to judge :?:

It doesn't matter where the guide takes you, as long as you had a good time and introduced a kid to the sport.

I don't have an issue with what the dad did, I think that's great. I think it's ridiculous that a guide charged them money and took them to Guana.

Every duck guide in Florida takes their clients out on public waters. there is only one who doesn't and his property pretty much backs up to STA 5.

I know exactly who he's taking about the guy is a clown. Been hunting 2-3 years, works at academy, brags about going over the limits on blue bills, claims to have snuck out a live wounded one he keeps as a pet, charges $250 to guide public land without a license, and don't know a lick about hunting ( he's a self admitted duck shooter). All this came from his mouth one day when I was in the store shopping. Not the kind of guy I want my kid to learn from.... sorry!!

I picture the phone dialogue going like this:

Client: Im not a duck hunter, but my son wants to get into it.

Guide: Yeah ill take you out, do you know anything about ducks?

Client: No.

Guide: sweet, Ill see you at the ramp, bring a check.

__Hangs up phone___

Guide to his buddy at Academy: Im gonna take this sucker out to guana and tell him coots are ducks. He will think that theres virtually unlimited ducks.

Buddy at Academy: Falls on floor laughing and chokes on realtree energy drink.

Client calls wife on way home:

He put us on a virtually unlimited number of ducks

lol. the guy behind the gun/bow counter at the Academy in Tallahassee didnt even know what a release was when I took my girlfriend to look @ the bows they had. I just stared at him for what I think was about 5 seconds or so and just turned around and walked out :fingerhead:

Grubbab,

hey man if you and your kid want to get into the obsession definitly stear away from the guides that go to guana. This last season was my first time out here in Fl, since i grew up in Va, and started hunting up in Va, then got orders back down here i didn't even have a clue where to go. But luckily these guys on here are great people and in a couple months tought me a ton and got my sense of direction down here. I went to guana a couple times, and the first times i was out was during the week which wasn't bad at all, then i went out with nick and i guess everyone slept in that day and we did good. the last weekend i was out i got the true experience of guana with all the traffic that i couldn't even have imagined. Get to know some guys here and if your boy still wants to go out this fall i'm sure some of these guys will welcome you in like i was welcomed in..... :welcome:
