Red Dot was good til.........

Postby Sagebrush » Sun Apr 21, 2013 9:04 am

I went to the trap range to test more loads for the coming shoot.

My 1 1/8oz of #8's at 1145fps was my go to load for the 16 yard singles that chipped and broke clays all day long,
that used 16.2 grs of Red Dot, and shot at my "impact area" with light recoil.

Then I went to the new load with 18.2 grains of Green Dot. Alliant data calls out 1090 fps for this load but in my
Rem/Peters hulls with a fig8 style wad and w209 primer, this load feels like it has a little more velocity than the Red Dot
load with a touch more recoil , maybe a "Solid" 1145 fps load and it.................

"CRUSHES the Birds" !!

Still messing with Green Dot and Unique for my HDCP loads 24 & 25's, not 100% 25's at the 27 yard line yet.
Good shooting.

My reloader is set-up for 18.5 grs of 700 x , Cb1118 wad , 1 1/16 oz of shot in a tapered hull . This load runs a little over
1200 fps and pattern well in my over-bored guns using a Lt Full or IM choke from the 27 . I also shoot the same load for sporting
with different chokes but , very seldom go below a LM choke . It does a fine job for me !

I have been loading Red Dot for 40 years in shotgun and pistol and love it and it's performance especially out of the shotgun.
My current load is 16.8-17 gr Rd,AA hull, 209 Win,blue Windjammer, 1 1/8 shot and it breaks and crushes everything I shoot at from 16 to 27 yds. It is also my hun, sharpies, and early season pheasant load with 7 1/2's over pointing dogs. I am going to guess the fps is somewhere near 1200. I do know this load patterns in three of my shotguns.
When I was shooting a lot of doubles trap I would back the load down to 15.8-16 gr for my 1st shot and the above load for the next. This load was much softer and allowed me to get on the second target a little faster.
This loading was out of a O/U and do not know if it will function in a semi.
In the second load all other components are the same. I was prepared to have a dirty bottom bbl for doubles, but that also didn't happen.
Gotta Love Red Dot.

Not surprised, Green Dot has a slower burn rate than Red Dot. It will give a tighter patterns. Trap shooters have always known this to be true. Try the pattern board to see what it looks like.

I really don't care much for a tighter pattern but , a even pattern that won't allow a target to pass through . I can tight'en
patterns up with choke constriction to better suit my needs , depending on shot size !

I always had good luck with green dot, it was probably my favorite powder to use for sporting clays loads. I don't care much for Unique, it burns dirty in my experience.

+1 on Unique burning dirty...................

This is one powder that does better ( also HS6) near the top ranges of its ability in shotgun and pistol loads.......
but I also had a very dirty barrel with a 1 1/8oz. load with just 22grs of Universal clays in a Rem sts hull.

Tried 17.9grs of green with the 1 1/8oz. load the other day and it did just as good as the 18.2 loading. Will put
it across the chrony next time out.

Let me guess , 17.9 of green , I say maybe low 1100's fps with possibly a pretty good pattern ?

With matching the speed of your 1 oz of 8's , I would say is a good load for your 1 1/8 oz load with green dot ? or

just load 18.3 of red dot / 700x and call it good !

In my experience slower burn rates give slightly tighter patterns but so does hard shot. I can load with softer shot when I want a bit wider pattern without changing chokes. I have about 10 pounds of OLD (probably 20 years) red dot and I quit using is because of how dirty it was. Someday when I can no longer buy powder I will have to resort to loading it up. Right now my favorite is American Select. It has very low felt recoil with my 1200fps loads with 1 oz and 1-1/8 oz. real happy with the patterns too.

I have been looking at Amer. Select for about two years now, seem that the charge weight is very close to
Greendot and about the same pressures. I use Green with my 38 spl loads and do not know if AS will work with pistol loads. Only reason I have not tried it................
How does it do with a full 3 dram load with an 1 1/8 oz. payload at HDCP ranges? It has to be a LOT BETTER at 1oz. and 7/8 oz. loads than Greendot....................Green, sucks. " VERY Dirty"............but it is really a 1 1/8 oz. powder.

I have loaded 1oz and 1-1/8 oz but I load mostly 1200fps and it works great. VERY clean
