Turkey Season 2013

Postby chambo32 » Sun May 05, 2013 7:26 pm

Has anyone ever seen a breeding callus like this on a turkey before? He was 19.5 lbs 8 inch beard and 1 inch spurs.

I have been hunting what i believe to be this same bird for 4 years, but with no luck and a lot of close calls, but not sure if that would be possible to have a 6 year old turkey. His numbers don't say "Old Birds" but the callus makes me think he has been breeding for some time.

This guy was 16.5 lbs 9 inch beard and 7/8 spurs

Average life expectancy of a wild turkey is 5 years,and I think 6 years is pushing it! That is what I have been told from a biologist! But who knows I shot a goose that was banded in 89 in 2010,thats 21 friggen years!

As for those being calouses from breeding,I would have to say yes! I have had birds that were worn right down almost bald on the breast area,and the skin all dried out,kind of tanish looking! That is a sign you shot the boss bird in that area! He is the one doing all the breeding! Those birds were 3 year olds or better!

Here is a link to give you an idea of the life span of a wild turkey;

Good job on the turkeys,both those birds are good birds, and hopefully they strutted and gobbled all the way in and you had a great show! Nothing is more exciting that having them come in that way thundering out gobbles! :thumbsup:
