Oil Pressure question

Postby Slack Tide » Thu May 23, 2013 10:24 am

I have a 2013 Sierra that I notice the oil pressure gauge goes up and down depending on idle or on the gas...I've never noticed that in any other vehicle I've owned....any thoughts on that? It seems to be steady at 40 most of the time, but then dips down at idle, or slightly up when I have to stand on it.

It's normal. The oil pump is (usually) driven off of the camshaft so pump speed/pressure will vary with engine speed. It's probably the case with most engines, but I think a lot of mfr's just have a dummy gauge that tells you that there is pressure, not what it actually is like the Chevy gauge does.

Cool thanks guys...I thought so, but I'd never seen one do that before.

perfectly normal. mine hovers around 40 at idle, close to 60 when on the highway @ 2200rpm.
