Egg or mushroom sinkers for Texas Rigs?

Postby Irish Lad » Mon Jul 08, 2013 1:42 pm

It seems most use egg sinkers for their Texas Rigs. Is there any disadvantage to using mushroom sinkers(tangles when carrying? etc.). The wind can blow pretty good here in Southern Utah. Also for those who use swivels on their decoys, what size? Thanks in advance for the advice.

For swivels we use these and then cut off the metal sleeves attached to them. ... &key=15168

I like egg sinkers because I think you have less tangle issues, but I've never tried texas rigs with mushroom weights. If your in a lake not a river, go with the 6oz egg weights and you shouldn't have a problem with them blowing away.

Eggs slide better. Mushroom usually have the eye hole from side to side vs top thru bottom. If you want to use the sliding weight method it may be a pain. Mushrooms will work if you do the fixed weight style vs sliding. Or if you can find one with the eye hole from top to bottom.

You could also try the flat egg style(not sure what is technical name is).

I hunt a tidal river and use Mushroom weights in what can be pretty stiff currents. Egg weights do not always hold decoys in place in a hard blow. Mushrooms won't slide unless the water is to deep for your decoy line.
